Hi folks,

I may be able to swap my old landrover for this BSA, any thoughts on how much it's actually worth? I can't find any bikes for sale to give me an idea of the market value.

I'm guessin my Landy is worth about £500-£600 so if i could talk him down to £700 for the bike i would be happy enough to give him £100-£200 on top of it.

Opinions?

You've said what it is worth to you so go to him and see what he expects. If he wants a grand and your ride then it is probably worth too much.

Hard to price old stuff. Take my wife, no please, take her

Landy is a 1982 series 3 lwb 2.3 diesel with the flatbed back.

Needs a bit of work on the chassy to repair some rust, and needs the refurbished gearbox I have, fitted properly. Also needs a coat of paint badly lol.

lwb s3 not tax exempt id say 3-400 there both the bike and landrover dogs. to be quite frank. S3 that needs welding on chassis and a fakd Gbox that sint tax exempt isnt worth the metal you need to weld it with. to be quite frank

a good, running D7 bantam is worth about 400quid tops they were never the best of the bantams with only 3 gears

look for a late D10, D14/4, or a B175 those are the best ones & you can pay around 800 for a spotless one maybe less if you shop around

or go for an early D1 125 & pay about 1200+ for a good one if you're after something collectable

the points on the D10, D14 & B175 are on the right hand side of the engine under a little cover

where as all the bantams from D1 to D7 had that engine layout

oh.. & the D14/4 wasn't being made in 1963 Laughing

my first bike was a D1, i sold it for £500, and then got told by a dealer a week after that he wouldve given that for the number plate! lol
good d1s go for over a grand but the d7 and older are nowhere near that. a mate at work just bought two complete bikes for £400 and that included a box of spares with a complete spare engine, two barrels and pistons, and loads of other bits.
that one is only worth about £400 at a push i would say. the barrel and hubs are rusty as hell from the look of it. you can get a mint fully restored one for not much more than £5-600.

I learn t a lesson with a triumph tiger cub: chroming fork stanchions costs £125 about the same a ones for a '59 bonneville, new wheels cost about the same, bearings cost the same, paint spraying costs the same, powdercoating the same.

The restoration industries prices can mean in the end you have a cub worth £1200 having spent about the same doing it up as you would have done on a Bonnie worth £12,000,( or a Bantam / Goldstar).

I know this is very simplistic but I started doing up an old basic commuter and the bills started piling up, I realized ,looking at the tiny drum brakes, I didn't want the end product enough to spend that amount of time and money on it.

Have you looked at B31s??? if you want a BSA, I bought a Moto Guuzzi V50 for £450(no mot)in the end

Sorry to sound a bit pessimistic but I wish somebody had talked me through things before I went down a 6 month dead end.

And having said all this a Bantam would have been a better bet than a Cub anyway.

Cheers
Dibble
