online photo cropper

I quite like using photos I've taken as wallpaper. This was reasonably straightforward when I had a 4:3 monitor, but since getting a widescreen one (resolution 1600 x 900) I've not been able to crop images successfully and just using a simple 'resize' distorts the image.

Does anyone know of a free or online utility to crop a photo to a specific size? For example, if I want to take a 1600 x 900 crop out of a much larger photo image without distorting the picture. The photo croppers I've tried don't seem to include this option

GNU Image Manipulation Program. aka GIMP.

Has all the functionality of photoshop and is free, open source software. If you can't do something to an image with this, it's only because you haven't learned how to yet.

Thanks for that stinkwheel. Just had a quick play around with it. Complex, and a bit over my head, but I succeeded in getting it to do what I wanted. Will have a bit of a play around with the program later on.

Two utilities I'd recommend.
Both are a little simpler than GIMP (horses for courses and all that).
Both are free for home use.

1.
FastStone FSResizer.

Resize under the advanced options.
Have a play, it's quite good.

2.
JPEGCrops

A bit of an oldie and hasn't been updated in a while but does the job.

Also a little buggy, don't load more than 80ish images to crop/resize and you should be ok. Also if display freezes stop it with Task Manager and restart. Usually only occurs for me on big jobs too.

In fact for occasional use the JPEGCrops is one I'd pick. Allows you to define your own sizes. Again, download and have a play.

If I'm resizing loads of pictures as a batch, I use an application called phatch.

It's text-based with a point and click user interface. You don't actually see the pictures and manipulate them, you just tell it what to do to them.

You tell it how big you want them, what format you want them saved as and where you want it to put them. Then you just point it at a folder and let it work away.

I use it a lot to batch process my digital camera images down to a reasonable size for uploading and for converting them to a lossless format.

It's a linux application though. Don't know if there is a windows version.
