I am designing a new bike lock for my degree and would apreciate your opinions/advice on the following designs.

These are only ideas at the moment so improvements will be made depending on feedback.

Please see the attachments and vote your favourite.

Thanks for reading.

Most useful thing I've bought was an alarmed disc lock, simple straight forward and portable. I've seen alarmed cable reel locks, but I'm not keen on the cable part, seems like a weak link.

Thumbs Up

The handcuffs lock design has lots of square edges to scratch your paint/lacquer.

Cable reel, as it's the only one that could comfortably be carried on a bike. But it's not exactly innovative, is it? I thought the idea of designing something wasn't "nick an existing idea and change it slightly".

My Penny Coin Penny Coin

Cable: Seems pretty weak IMO. I would only feel comfortable locking my lid to it.

Handcuffs: The strongest option but locking a bike there aren't many places you can locking it to.

D-Lock: I believe the strongest out of the 4. But its already played out. They've bee around for ages.

Clamp: Looks too big for a bike. Carrying that around with you would be a task and a half.

I believe what makes a good bike lock is it to be strong, lightweight and easily transported.

Chains are good as they can turn corners and wrap around stuff.
Disk locks are good as they can stop some chav pushing it away.
D-locks are good as they can also lock through the disk and stop pushing it away.

Thumbs Up

They are all bad compared to existing designs.

The cable reel would be ok for a bicycle lock and has been done, but any cable that can bend enough to coil tightly, isnt going to be very thick, and isnt going to be very strong.

A simple disc lock, is better than your wheel clamp.

Having said that good grades probably wont depend on the idea being any good, just on the way you present it, as those marking are unlikely to have any idea of what would make a good bike lock.

How about something securing either one fork or the front wheel to the centrestand? Preventing both wheels of the bike from touching the ground at the same time.

Would work best if it were possible to maintain the steering lock somehow. I would imagine a variation on the D lock type (handcuff sort by your definitions) would be best suited to such a design.

Down side - a lock long enough would probably be too unwieldy for street use, but may be useful for security at home for those not lucky enough to have access to a garage or shed.

I'd actually prefer something that would give anyone touching my bike a mild electric shock, and that would scream at the same time. Thus making the person reluctant to stay near the bike at any cost.

i know my ideas arn't the best and appreciate all your feedback, im avoiding alarms or anything electrical although a shock is a nice idea! i can improve on existing designs and liked the style of the cable winch but use a chain instead? im also thinkin of designing a new locking mechanism (anti pick etc)...harder than i originally anticipated.

The wheel clamp looks the strongest but not very portable.

A wheel clamp might be an idea...but how would you carry it? It'd be a pain...perhaps if it was an integral part that extended from the wheel (as in always there), that you could mechanise in some way, it could be a winner?

In my opinion the cable reel is a great lighter weight option but not as secure as say, a chain. It's all well and good having something easier to carry but there's no compromise for the piece of mind a chain offers. My preference is the chain, as mentioned security offered out ways the religious act of slinging it under my arm and over my head. It's bulky and not ideal, that is if you don't have a top box or paniers to store it when riding. Say the combination of the two, a light weight chain and the practicalitys of a reel could in my experience prove to be an inovative product, of which I would be tempted to purchace. Because as of yet i dont belive I have come across a product like this. To add to the post maybe consider supplying something to transport the system, either carrying it on the bike or on one's person, some thing that dose not rely on the rider having to chuck a back pack on everywhere he or she goes.
