Ok, I know it's not the news story of the year, but...

Riding along a single carriageway A-road last night. Many cars in front and quite a few coming in the opposite direction. I wasn't in a rush and decided it really wasn't worth over-taking all of the cars (the road widens and gets quieter a couple of miles ahead anyway) and just sat a safe distance behind the car in front at 50mph.

An old, basic looking Focus zooms up behind me and starts tail-gating and weaving. "knob", I thought. He follows for a mile or so. He appears to pull across towards the middle of the road -straddling both lanes- as we go a round a blind left bend/under a railway bridge. I was wary.

We approach a medium-sized off-set roundabout, I slow for the approach and Focus tail-gates. I assume that there will be traffic at the straight-ahead exit (there often is). I take the left lane which gives a better view and line for the tight, single lane exit. I see Focus man pull across to the right lane and take the roundabout with tyre-squealing abandon to over-take me .......and then slam on the brakes to avoid rear-ending the 3-series in the inevitable traffic at the exit.

I check it is safe, blip the throttle and pass the Focus & about 5 slow-moving vehicles. Reeling-in various vehicles over the next mile or so. Focus is nowhere to be seen.

I wasn't riled, just smug Thumbs Up

When it comes down to it, bikes are better. Mr. Green

I'm in my car today Thumbs Down

ps. Presumably the Focus owners forum will have a tale about how someone 'smoked' a bike around the inside on a roundabout Laughing

Agree, good thing to keep calm and not provoke him, sounds like a minor maniac.

I had a bizarre one the other day riding down a dual lane road. I took off from a set of lights at a fair pace although nothing crazy. About half a mile up the road I could see in my mirror a small car on a mission to catch up with me, and it pulls alongside at the lights. Car had four blokes in it and I was understandably concerned when the driver wound down his window. I was ready to make a swift exit, but turns out they had been arguing over whether my bike was a 250 or not and wanted confirmation Rolling Eyes

I did briefly consider stopping to patronisingly slowly shake my head at the Focus driver, but decided against it for road rage prevention
-I'm sure he was wound up enough by me disappearing off into the distance anyway Wink
It would have been amusing -albeit not for the other driver- if the Focus had actually smashed into the shiny new 3-series on the exit of the roundabout.

Must be the silly season - the halfwits are out in full force. Had some donkey in some sort of large 4x4 rip past me this morning in the middle of heavy traffic, almost colliding with a police car coming the other way and then managing to get flashed by the speed camera fifty yards further on. Laugh, I nearly fell off the Gyp Laughing

Not all donkeys drive cars though. I sat behind two cars to the right of my lane at a set of lights yesterday. I didnt go straight to the front because a van was very close to the island surrounding the light and the road opens up in front so no real bother. Some nutter on a bike decides this is no good and he's so much better he can make the gap. He ended up hitting the curb with his back wheel side on and wobbling away. I just sat and shook my head, perhaps I like my bike too much to be hitting curbs with the inside edge of the back wheel these days Laughing

There are a growing number of nobends riding bikes nowadays. If anything bikers are even worse than the cagers for doing ridiculous things. Most of the idiots tend to be weekend rider types. Worse of all are the bloody ped bois on their scooters. Fucking menace, those buggers Shocked

You are wrong.

There is a very marked DECREASE in the number of people riding bikes now-a-days.
Due to the re-regulation of the bike test. (3rd directive)

There is however a certain increase in the number of 'Product of Spunk-dribble' skite-ing around in converted tumble-dryers with complete-wank musick cumin from the bits inside and that horrible trumpetty din cumin from the sticky out bit under the rear.
I would slap the parents. then crush the cars with the occupants strapped in and on fire. Twisted Evil

My car is more fun in the corners than my bike Very Happy, nothing like a whaling tail end.

Bikes and cars are both good but at different things, a sports bike is just as much fun as a sports car, although slower in a straight line.

But then speed isnt everything.

Id leave most sportsbikes for dead round most UK twisties in the RX, even myself on the sp1.

I'd agree with that, some roads lend themselves well to a bike where you can apex it a bit better, but most of the time its easier to go quick in a car.

Pushing a bike can end in tears very easily, its always feels a bit less risky in a car (even if that's not always the case).

"Sports car v/ bike debate"

Yawn.

The advantage of a bike being that being get stuck behind queues of slow-moving traffic is less of an issue than in a car, even one that can hang the tail out.

I agree to a point, but I found my RX8 got a bit boaty with cornering over 100, my sportsbike doesnt.... the bonus was the RX was very controllable when the rear would step out.... Smile

Cars have more weight to lug and inertia in the high speed bends.

I miss my RX8 but I did 35k in it and have the fuel bills to prove it !!

It's not the straight-line speed that makes a car able to 'compete' against a 'real' bike but the ability to keep more wheels on the ground. Cars will slide bikes high-side you into the infirmary/mortuary.

But..... A bike's brutal PTW ratio and 0 to 100 in about 5.6 seconds leaves most cars devastated.

Suzuki GSXR 1000
0-60 mph* 2.56 sec.
0-100 mph* 5.63 sec.
Top-gear roll-on, 60-80 mph*

I can do most four wheeled passenger safety cells even on my big trailly 0-60 <3.4

Starting and stopping my stopwatch was the most difficult bit of my time test.

you cant always go back to simple 0-60 times, everyone knows the bike will be quicker, this isnt what im saying.

Im saying i can negotiate most twisties in the UK quicker than myself or most sportbikes.

If there isnt a long enough straight to overtake on in the set it wont be able to overtake, and if it does it will hold the car up in the next set anyway.

Dont get me wrong, bikes are fun, very fun when you can use them properley but you just cant on the road, which is why im kinda bored of bikes at the moment, ive done so many trackdays, toured most of europe on a sportsbikes, done and seen some amazing things on a bike.
then you come back to the UK, you know what your bike can do but you just cant use it.

Its like you say, if i get a bit cocky in my car the back will slide out, if i do that on the sp1 im heading for road furniture, go figure.

Im no slouch on a bike either
