My front tyre has about 3mm tread left, so is nearly down. A new one costs about £90 with postage, and a part worn one about £48 with postage with 5mm tread.

It doesnt need replacing yet but was thinking about getting it just so I have it when the current tyre is knackered.

Is it worth it? How much tread do new tyres come with anyway?

Cheers Thumbs Up

Nah not cheap enough and unless you can fit them yourself fitting costs will eat into that.

Nope. You'll only have to replace it sooner - in my opinion Smile
I wouldn't want someone else's part worn tyre.

If it is for a track bike then I would buy part worn track tyres. But I wouldn't buy part worn road tyres.

I bought a set of part worn track tyres this time round because they were £40 fitted.

They have to be uber cheap for you to reap the benefits.

depends how part worn they are tbh. spent ages looking for part worns and managed to get a set of almost brand new (<150 miles) diablo corsa 3's for £90 delivered.
they'll last me for quite a while, already done a trackday with them.
some sellers have really unrealistic expectations of what old tyres are worth.
one with not much left should be dirt cheap as it wont last long anyway. the costs rack up when you take in fitting/disposal of old tyre.
rambling...

Find out what tread depth the new tyres have - if 5mm is the minimum, I believe some often only have just over that to start with, so may be a pretty good deal.

However, usually I'd expect part worn tyres to be maybe a quarter of the price of new or less to justify it.

Worth it more if you're fitting them yourself when it's more relatively worn, as obviously if you're paying for that, it's increasing the cost per mm of tread a bit more.

I bought a part worn front for my 10R last month from evil bay. £52 including delivery, as opposed to £110 new. When it came through it still had the shiney surface on the edges and cant have done more than 100 miles.

Got it fitted for free as well.... Wink

Looking for a part worn for the rear now....

I have run part worns on the rear on other bikes before, usually tyres that had been tracked somewhere. As I only used the tyre for the road I wasnt fussed, plus I was only paying £30 for a rear fitted at the time. Makes even more sense through the winter when you cant crank it over.

Nothing wrong with part worns.
A shop called All bikes in whytleaf in surrey sells parts worns for £30 including fitting same as FWR in kennington .

Ive been using part worns for the past 4 years I went up to the north of scotland from london and back on a rear part worn with 3 puncture repairs on it and was fine.

I buy part worn's from Profile Tyres, but I go down there, look at the tyre, and watch them fit them. I have a good rapport with these guys as I go there for bike and car tyres.

I feel I am getting a good deal. Thumbs Up

I'd go for cheaper tyres rather than part worns. Moto-tyres or blackcircles should have a tyre cheaper than £90. My last set of tyres were about £70 delivered, although I do run narrow crossplies instead of this newfangled radial technology.

I fit them myself too, which is piss easy with crossplies and a bit harder on radials (steel? In a rubber tyre? What kind of idiot had that idea?). Use lots of washing up liquid, makes it 10 times easier and washes off.

All that said, 3mm? Not only is it still legal, you're nowhere near seeing the steel. Changing tyres before they're worn out is money down the drain. The only exception I apply here is when they're really old. I bought a car last year where the tyres were about 20 years old (in the words of the tyre fitter as the bead seperated from the rim, "fuck me, anyone got a camera, that's been on a long time"). I replace bike tyres when they're old enough to look and feel knackered. My old NC24 started off tyres well over 10 years old. Was fine on dry roads, the first slimy morning was terrifying. If I even thought about the touching the brakes, it just slid. Got a lift that day.

Having the front wheel out is a good time to change your fork oil if its a bit old, and clean the underside of your mudguard and inside of the fork legs. Good access to your downpipes if you're thinking of cleaning and painting them, which is a good idea if they're mild steel.

I managed to get a set of Radials for my x7 (90/90/18 front and 110/90/18rear) for £65 fitted, spangly new un all! (sava mc7's if i recall, farrrr better than the aincient crossply's it did have on that had been flat for 10years+!)

Have also ran the zx6 on £100 a pair tyres and not had a problem. I just refuse to pay the OTT prices for new rubber! (£120ish for just a rear every 6k odd miles takes the pee when the bike is used everyday).

I bought a pair of race tires for my NC30, they were spot on. The middles were hardly touched and the sides were pretty torn up, but it's the middles i always wear out first.
