I have seen the waterproof roll bags/dufflebags Question is what size ? I figure 70-90 litre but how would the length be how do you secure them on length ways or side ways against a top-box ?
pictures if possible.

thanks

Best is the Ortlieb Large racksack for most bikes as it doesn't impede access to panniers and stick out too much. Also as it rolls down from the side and not the top you can get to gear quicker.

The secret with adding this kind of luggage onto a bike is to mimic a pillion and not put to much stress on the rear sub-frame.

Mount it across the back seat, ideally as much over the pillion pad as possible. If you have a luggage rack try and limit the weight... it does make a huge handling difference and can put too much weight on the rear shock on a mono shock - law of levers.

Don't mount it in line behind yourself as this fecks up handling as well as acts like a sail for a side wind.

I use mine for my camping gear - Tent, footprint mallet, picnic mat(adds so much warmth) and self inflating mats all ready to go.

Take tent out and stick lid and gloves in... keeps them off the ground and protects them when pitching the tent in the rain. Get the tent bag back in as soon as possible and it will usually be dry enough if you pack the wet tent into it to get you home with everything else still dry after a weekend rallying, or an over-nighter en-route Smile

Just get a really big one and fill it as full as you feel comfortable with. Roll the top down to take up any excess room.

Anyway you can - I stuck my sleeping bag in one on the outside of the bike so it didn't have to be compressed lots all the time.
They're on offer at Aldi at the moment or soon I believe (may have been LIDL).

One thing to remember with any type of roll bag is that the bag and the contents can compress and settle... and come loose.

I have been using Ortleibs for years and Les at TravelDri-Plus advised me to buy Rokstraps years ago... best advice anyone has ever given me luggage wise.

All those who have seen them in action have bought some themselves. On many occasions I have seen rachet straps and bungees and cargo nets come loose over a long ride with luggage bouncing down the roads from plenty of other friends bikes, but never seen it happen since most people I know moved to Rokstraps

Got one of those. Took it around europe and its perfect for carrying camping gear for two plus jackect/trouser liners and micro fibre towels. Will be using it again this year.

I have just invested in a 40Litre one (Sports Direct shop) for all interested, they are reduced in price right now!!!

Anyway, I use those canvas straps (rok straps) / or a belt around the circumference, and then snake through bungee straps to fasten to the bike and/or panniers. The good thing about these bags is that you can sit on them and squeeze out the excess air before sealing.

No pics, as I rarely have never thought about taking a photo when the bike is loaded. If I remember mid-May, I will.

Went to Aldi last night and to be honest the pillows were made out of the same thickness of vinyl as the roll bags... so bought two inflatable pillows as the flock is wearing off our current ones.

Don't bother with the bags from Aldi unless you want them for just this summer.

Actually don't bother with Aldi at all if you don't want to catch "poor"! I had to rub my hands with 20 pound notes when I got home in case I had caught "poor"! Laughing

Rubbish

I'ved used mine extensively, over filled it, over tightened it, dropped it etc.. and its still going strong.

They could of course have changed them for this year though.

There was one opened out , and I was amazed at how thin the vinyl was and the seams looked skimpy. A mate of mine has the ones from last time they sold them as dive bags and it was about half the thickness of the Ortleibs, which is still pretty thick.

The ones I looked at yesterday were so thin I could see inside them without direct light and they had no visible reinforcing fibres in the vinyl ... you pays your money and takes your choice. I reckoned they would get too soft and split in the heat of a continental summer, so left them in the shop

I had a look at the bags in Aldi too. I've decided I'll carry a roll of bin liners instead.
