Helmet Law

Got me thinking the other day, I remember reading somewhere, not sure where, that Sikh's don't have to wear a helmet by law because of their turbans and their religion?

Anyway, my older brother has had dreadlocks since he was about 15, he's 33 now and they're almost down to his waiste. When he came up at christmas (I only see him once a year) I was showing him my bike and I said we should go out on it. We have a few different size lids but none of them fit him because of the dreads.

There's no way, in a million years, he would shave them off, so that's not an option but how can you get round that? If you bought an XXXL lid, it wouldn't be safe to wear.

I think I also remember reading somewhere that rastafarians have a similar right to Sikh's?

As far as I know the exemption purely applies to Sikhs.

EDIT - think the exemption only applies to Sikhs when they are wearing a turban anyway.

Saw a bunch of Sikh guys on R1s tearing through the centre of birmingham without helmets a few months back... I was thinking: a really big helmet, a helmet with a turban on top of it or my personal favourite, a hard shelled armoured turban...

All would have looked better than spilt brains.

i know a guy with huge dreads tied up at the back, he has a XXL Caberg helmet (could have been XXXL, cant remember now i havent seen him in ages)

I've had dreads for as long as I've had bikes. They're not long but they are fat. Just get him fitted for a helmet with them tied back, if they're dangerously long fold them back on themselves and tie again outside of the helmet.

I have literally no problems fitting helmets, large is fine for me. The thing to watch out for when you get him fitted is uncomfortable pressure from particularly fat or tight parts of the dreads. My old x-lite gives me pain the temples these days from where my dreads have changed shape a bit up front. Worth keeping the lid on for a good 20 minutes to check, 'cos it's fucking horrid!

A pisspot helmet? I just really wouldnt wanna land my face on the road at say 60mph in the event of an off... can you imagine the damage that would do...

The way I see it, a Turban is pretty much low-tech protective head gear. Sikh relgion also suggest they carry a dagger. Yes this is religious, but like most religious things such as food rules, its from practical reasons. The reason for the dagger, is self defence, and the bangle they wear, is basically a knuckle duster. It can certainly be used as such.

So the way I see it, the approach should be to make a helmet that can be religiously recognised as a turban, in the way you consecrate a church.

Whether you can get sikh leaders to go along with this, is another matter.

I don't know if it's still true, but if you went for a ride in the '80s without a lid, and got caught...and you could convince the cops you had totally forgotten to wear it, you could get away with it!
