Hi all,
Been a while since I was on here...
Recently my zzr has started running really roughly. It basically sounds a lot like a vw beetle. I thought the first time it happened that the fuel had gone off/degraded while the bike was sitting in the garage for a couple of weeks, so I put some miles in a some fresh fuel and that seemed to sort things out for a while, but it's happened again, this time with the bike only being in the garage for a week or so. Now, I didn't think that fuel could 'go off' that quickly. This time, I'm pretty sure it should have good fuel as I've refilled it and any 'bad' fuel should have been flushed through by now.
So, perhaps something more serious going on?

Any suggestions appreciated!

Hi

By sounding like a Beetle do you mean it sounds lumpy? If so then possibly not firing on one (or more) cylinders. Carbs are quite possibly the issue (fuel evaporates and leaves a residue, which can block the small jets in the carbs) but could also be the plugs.

All the best

Keith

Hmm, I thought it might be something like that.
Sounds like another trip to the doctor is in order.
Poor thing.
Sad

Hi

On the ZZR the plugs are not difficult to do, just time consuming. Tank off, airbox off (which is the bit that takes far more time than it should), coils off and then you can get at the plugs.

As to the carbs, first try would be to try some injector cleaner in the fuel and then go for a good ride.

All the best

Keith

A bit tardy with my reply, but I just thought I would add that I bought some injector cleaner from Halfords, STP stuff I think, added a dash to the tank and it seems to have cleared things up.
Mostly anyway. The problem seemed to come back, so I've been adding 'a bit' of injector cleaner for a few refills and the engine sounds a lot happier now.
I say 'a bit' as the instructions on the bottle refer to a 60 litre tank, so I've just been eyeballing it so to speak.

So thanks for the tip, saved me some cash etc going to the garage.
Might have a go at the plugs sometime as well if I get bored...

Thumbs Up

You shouldn't have to keep using carb cleaner.

Disassemble your bike and clean the carb out properly, especially the jets, as you keep disturbing bits of old gelatinous fuel it will keep clogging. Until you physically clean the jets they *will* have a film of it on them, narrowing the jet and messing up the smooth operation of your bike.

If you havent done so in the 5000km, replace your plugs, you wouldnt believe how resistance builds up in a plug and comprimises efficiency.

Let us know if you can get it going well without some overpriced fuel additive.

when you say sounds like a beetle are we taking just a general lumpyness or are we talking rattles?

Reading your first post it sounds like youve picked up some water in your fuel It settles in the float bowls and can be difficult to shift riding the bike can break the droplets up a bit letting the bike run a bit better.

Also because water has a higher surface tension your floats won't operate properly, if you have a lot of water in them you can starve / flooding the bike.

It happened to mine a few weeks ago,
After filling up I got a couple miles down the road and the bike just went flat, the idle dropped and started beig a bit umpy.

I pulled over and one of the carbs was flooding so I popped the seat got my screwy and drained the carbs down, they had loads of rusty water in them but the bike ran fine and stopped flooding once id drained it all a couple of times.
