I've been learning to ride under the DAS scheme and passed everything, first time, until I hit my Module Two exam. I live in the North East and Gateshead MPTC (Multi Purpose Test Centre) is my nearest test centre.

They appeared to be failing an awful lot of people (like 4 or 5 in the time I was standing in the waiting room, waiting for my test!) and four tests later... well, I'm up to attempt five now!!

I thought with so many people failing, they must have a low pass rate and so out of interest, I asked the DSA for the pass rates of all England Motorcycle Test Centres/MPTC's using my favourite piece of legislation... the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

I received my information yesterday and to my amazement, Gateshead MPTC was not only sporting a low pass rate, it was the lowest in England.

I'm now considering taking my test in another test centre (maybe Banbury) as here, I have a 72.5% better chance of passing than I do at Gateshead. Seriously? YES! Check the data from the DSA - there is a massive fluctuation in results and against the England average of 72.9%, there are huge variations - alarming variations - between different test centres.

I've since written to the DSA, asking for an explanation as to how there can be such variations in the pass rates. Surely if the DSA provide national and uniform training, there should be a standard/average pass rate applicable throughout England?

You didn't need to do that as that information is already available on their website. Wink

The pass rate percentage doesn't mean very much on it's own.

I never said they should be the same:

Me and 4 of me friends have all passed there first time in the last six months, the examiners seemed quite fair on us, me friend didnt stop faster enough for the emergency stop on his mod 1, the guy let him do it again,

what have you been failing on?

Right turn on a T-junction. I waited for about 4 seconds behind my white line (to allow excess traffic to ease) when my lights turned green before taking up my right turn position and into my exit road.

That was a serious fault. Not serious enough to revoke my Driving Licence (I could do this in a car after all) like they would for a serious fault for failing your eye test. I know they're difference but technically, both serious enough to fail a riding test. I've spoken to friends and two instructors who though this was overly harsh.

Never mind... onward to Test 5. Smile

Funnily enough I live within walking distance of Gateshead MPTC Shocked Passed my car test, MOD 1 and MOD 2 all with the same bloke. Took me 2 attempts with MOD 1 & 2, I didn't feel as though I failed for unfair reasons so I'm surprised the pass rate is so low. Maybe geordies are stupid? Very Happy

The percentages mean little without knowing the number of people taking tests. Sample sizes from each center should be similar.

To be honest i didn't think i was failed un-fairly either, perhaps its to do with the roads (maybe some are more confusing in other areas???) Although i would like to know how the pass rate in harrogate is so high Thinking

Hi Rob, the school i'm using only use st helens. They also said it was becuase too many tests were being cancelled by the examiners at chester due to slightly bad weather conditions.

It's a percentage, so if 1000 people sat the test, 500 passed, it's a 50% pass rate. If 100 people took the test, 50 passed, it's still a 50% pass rate.

They work in percentages for this reason to give a fair/equal valuation across the board for the tests. There are only 2 possible outcomes, pass or fail. Irrespective of how many people sit it, we want to know how many of those are passing/failing.

I've written to the DSA asking them to explain the massive variation in results. I'm interested in seeing what they come back with. If it's a fob off, I'll ask for the number of tests taken at each centre and any more information applicable to this.

I've failed two tests in Chester, and in my opinion, it's a horrible place to take your test. I've also done two tests in Atherton, which has a 74%-ish pass rate. The roads there aren't too bad, although a couple of the junctions can be buggers. I'm assuming it's not too far from you, so there's another option for you.

One of my friends is an instructor for a Liverpool bike school and they only use St. Helens, so I think I'll be going there for attempt number 5!

But that assumes that the pass/fail ratio applied to the 100 is statistically significant and not just chance. If only 100 take the test at one place and 1000 take at another then you can't compare the two since confidence levels are significantly different, the ability to predict the result for number 101 is not linked to the pass rate of the 1000. The same would apply to the number of examiners.

The reason for the variation is obvious, the level of training in some areas is better than others Wink .

I've got my module 2 at that test centre a week on Monday, wish I never saw this thread now as it has me worried! Sad However when I was at my lesson on Friday the instructor had 2 students which had passed mod 2 first time that morning.

Maybe its your instructor? I know that there are not a high number of schools in the immediate gateshead/newcastle/washington area so it could well be down to the level of tuition being given.

Out of interest what were your other fails for mate?

Hey FrankieFish - One I was expecting cos I fooked up on my Following Distance for a short time, realised and braked. Too late though, I was clocked. Another was on an overtake on the A1 Northbound. My outside lane was clear, I pulled out to overtake a truck, as I pulled out, another car booting it down a slip road (from behind me and cars in the inside lane) pulled out and when he saw me in the outside lane tapped his brakes in a "reassurance brake" - for a second but my examiner said I'd affected the flow of traffic/affected another's driving. I was actually opening the throttle to do the overtake, a moment later, I was way passed the truck and back on the inside lane, the examiners hang back though to see the brake lights of cars to see if you affect their driving, so... BE CAREFUL on OVERTAKES.!! Smile

My GRANNY brakes in 3rd gear as she approaches roundabouts when they're clear... just in case... that could potentially affect a test result apparently if the examiner perceives the rider may have approached in a way to cause the driver to "cautiously come to brakes". I sh*t you not! Sad

Well thats annoying! What school do you use? Did you say you were in wallasey?
If i fail it this next time i may ask you for their number! Laughing
The tuition at bill smiths is quite good tbf, but i've found when i have my pre-test lesson, the guy who takes you on it can be a little annoying. For instance, when i'm getting used to the change of bike, i dont need him shouting "You ride Fu**ing worse than my nan!" right before my test Evil or Very Mad ! or the last time he said "left at the roundabout then immediately left", turned left at the roundabout, past a road on my right and i get " What the F*CK are you doing! i said turn right! you fu**ing idiot!"

As i say, it gets annoying as does the examiner when he tells me i've failed "I'm sorry to telly you you've failed, your a brilliant rider, sensible and observant, but i'm still failing you! Twisted Evil "
