Nope, just all the patches/updates have naturally slowed things

Not sure - but I think there are bound to be alien nuns involved in the phenomenon ...

I think that Microsoft have been sending out updates that purposely slow down your machine during boot-up/initial use period ...

Why?? ... people will want to upgrade to W7 as they see it is the only way to get faster boot-up ....

Who thinks I am onto something!?!?

XP Always slows down after a long period. Hence when I was running XP back in the stone age, I used to re-install Windows every 6 months.

Mine's fine and it's running XP SP3. Never been formatted since I got the PC in 2003.

I do lots of scans though and am fully aware of what is running on it.

I have checked what is running on it with task manager, there seems to be nothing of interest going on during the start up ...

Let me clarify what I mean ... I am referring to the first 3-5mins after hitting the on butt that the thing is dog slow. Once it is booted and sat there sorting its life out, away it goes it runs at the expected speed. I did wonder if it was the anti-virus clogging it up (which it will a little) but looking at task manager I don't think it is that ...

I have XP pro and/or home running on er ... 4 machines and they are all the same (need a few mins to become properly responsive) ... so it is not like I have an invisible process/nasty I don't know about (unless I have it on all 4 machines!! Laughing)... I think it is Mr Microsoft putting a 'pause' statement in some of his patches!! Mad

Use bootvis to see what process is taking the longest to load and work from there.

Drives get slow with age, doesn't help booting. Have plenty of free space on your boot drive and defrag it with windows defrag tool. Running a registry cleaner won't hurt if you haven't used one in a long time.

Windows XP is an ancient operating system now, W7 prioritises applications by default and allot faster load times. Get with the times and upgrade Very Happy

XP boots really quickly with a fresh install .. it is only after all the updates and service packs it then gets bogged down ...

Newer != better

Kwaka made ths mistake in the 1990s when the old GPZ700 or something was better than the short lived model destined to improve it.

I ran XP from 6 months before its official release until the begining of this year. Best thing I ever did upgrading to W7 but I did spend a fucking fortune on a monster PC.

When running XP though, as long as you're running the likes of AVG and a firewall, you're pretty much safe from viruses.

Also depends on the spec of your system as well mate, XP would run fast as anything from a fresh install, even on a shit PC but as soon as you start installing things and adding more items to the start up, it just starts taking the piss.

What spec is your PC?

You know W7 will run far better on an older PC than XP?

Vista was so sh1te, I went back to XP ... I CBA with W7 to be honest ... XP is a ruddy good OS - very stable and not full of the ghey!! Cool

I am sure I'll migrate to W7 at some point (probably when I get a new machine), but I really don't see the need as it won't really 'give' me much ...

As I said I have XP on several machines, none of them s3xy by today's standards, but more than up to the job of running an OS and browsing for porn!! Laughing ... as an example, my main one is a AMD 64 X2 Dual 4600+ 2GB ram - there is no way that should struggle with the OS ... my little 'Atom' netbooks should even cope ...

Agreed, Vista was total pants. I installed it, then promptly un-installed it a week later.

Seriously though, get W7 mate, you will be suprised at how good it is compared with XP/Vista and your AMD 64 machine will run that no problem. I have a similar rig downstairs and I just put W7 on it and runs 10x faster than it did with XP.

I reiterate, XP runs fast and smooth once it is up and running ... it just seems to take 3-5mins to get to the full ready to use state ...

It then downloads and update, installs it and then nags you about restarting it - I often tell it to f-off at that point!! Mr. Green

Well my other rig in the downstairs office is very similar to SV650s, 64bit dual athlon, similar speed, 2gb ram and it ran like shit with XP, runs perfectly since installing w7 ultimate 64x

I can't comment on really older systems and it not installing.

Do you have Windows Defender? That can slow things down but it is a good program to have.

I'd recommend doing a post on https://www.techsupportforum.com/microsoft-support/windows-xp-support/ as they're good and will get you to do allsorts and offer lots of advice. However, don't mention anything to do with downloading torrents........

Lol didnt mean in an aggressive way, sorry if it came across that way.

Ive got W7 running on VM, its got atleast half my resources and I found it quite slow, bearing in mind my pc isnt cheap.. i was quite upset with the performance.

I might try it on a new system build though Thumbs Up

Where I live, everyone's Vista got worse just as 7 was released. Make sense for XP to go shit as well. Thumbs Up

And at the risk of upsetting everyone... XP is horrible. Laughing
