What were you doing with the internet 10 years ago?

As the title asks. What websites were you using pre-2000? What messenger services? MMORPGs?

I remember using mostly teenchat to troll people, temple of the screaming electron (TOTSE.com) to find bomb recipes and other illegal shit, steakandcheese.com for funny images and videos and maintaining my geocities site. Downloading NES, commodore 64 and gameboy emulators was a blast too. As for porn, videos took too long so it was a quick altavista search for celebrities names with "nude" or "topless attached".
Used IRC and then old school MSNmessenger, whilst other people used ICQ and yahoo.
In fairness I was only 10-13 years old during that time.

I bet kickstart was maintaining encyclopedia britannica's website.

1998 I got the computer in my bedroom. I spent most of my time chatting away in the vast expanses of AOL chatrooms and using instant messenger to talk to my school friends. I used to frequent passworduniverse trying to get into paid porn site for free and waiting an hour for a 15second porn clip to download.

Using the newsgroups and various OneList groups to source parts for obscure old nails. Harping on about how things were so much better in the old days. And upping and downing porn. Pretty much like today Newsgroups are largely just one big sack of spam shit and OneList became eGroups and then Yahoo Groups, but not much has changed really.

Best development to come along in the past ten years, aside from broadband, is torrent sites, IMHO. ebay proves itself to be invaluable from time to time as well.

Remember downloading music and other things on Kazaa. But do remember it taking about 16 hours to download a 40mb video.

Think I started MSN Messenger on about version 2 with the old school 256 color emoticons. Remember having cyber sex with fellow 12 year olds (read 46 year old men called Trevor) on MSN Chat aswell. Happy times.

Lots of time in IRC downloading warez, napster, newgrounds.com to play amusing shockwave games. Trying to see if it was possible to derestrict a Suzuki ZR50 X1. Leaving the modem going overnight with a timer to shut off at 6am. Being yelled at for tieing up the phone line. Getting excited when a download hit a heady 5kb/s. Using webcrawler. Downloading short clips of porn very slowly. Downloading a grainy, highly compressed version of the matrix at 200mb, which took over 3 weeks and I never watched.

In '98 my brother went to uni, and came home with a CD full of porn clips. Best present ever, lasted me a long time. Playing command and conquer games online.

Looking for N64 cheats, and quite a few dreamcast and megadrive cheats (retro gaming has always been good).

Broadband was the best thing to happen to the internet. Still astounded these days that I can download at 1mb/s.

I used to log on just for a look on my dads computer, it was dial up and we couldnt use it long as someone always wanted to use the phone. It also cost a fortune I think. I think it was mainly msn that was from 2003 onwards but before it was just surfing looking up any crap in any chat room. Not really a lot to be honest. I had one of them freedomland keyboards that you pluged into your telly and landline, was just chat rooms really. Now that was expensive and slow.
