Damaged Bikes.

Just wondering if it would be worthwhile to buy a damaged bike, i'm a noob to the whole bike thing and will be taking my CBT on sunday followed by the DAS im 28btw.

I'm just doing research into bikes really and keep coming across damaged bikes which seem to be a fair bit cheaper than the others for obv reasons.

Now, being a newb the bike will not stay in a mint condition so i see no point spending 3k on something which will suffer from battle scars. By trade I'm a car painter/bodylad.,so a fix would be easy just wondering if they would be worth buying? this is totally dependant on the damage i guess same as cars.


The bikes ive been looking at are the R6 and the honda cbr600 i've not sat on them as yet as im just reading up etc and its a bank holiday and nowhere is open lol.

Cosmetic damage, certainly. Especially if you can fix it.

Other types of damage... depends how much work you're willing to do. Probably best avoided at first (save these projects for when you've got the time and inclination to spend ages in the garage.

Something mechanically sound but with cosmetic scratches and scuffs sounds like it would be right up your street.

Nope, unless you can buy them directly from the insurer the markup salvage companies add ontop makes most bikes non viable to repair and put back on the road again. This also considers that you will do ALL of your own repairs too.


Added to the fact they will be insurance write off recorded meaning you will get 20-40% less when you sell it for an unwritten off bike.

Not worth the hassle, generally speaking. It nearly always ends up being more expensive to sort than you thought it would be, and sourcing bits can be a pain too.

As bendy says - cosmetic damage you can get some good deals.
But damage requiring more work is often less economically viable unless it's a VERY good deal.
