On more than one occasion I have had bikes riding past me in my lane.

By that, I mean, not on the white line, but actually in my lane.

I saw another bike in my mirrors when I was in lane 2 on the motorway. Nearing my exit I pull into lane 1 in good time. Once moving over to the left lane I slow down to match the speed of the car in front.

coming up to the exit, I check my right mirror and then my left, lifesaver left (rospa tought me that and I've always found it a bit pointless, but I guess if a bike decided to undertake me then it's valid) indicate left and position myself more towards the left side of my lane. Then I realise that I didn't see a bike on my last mirror check. I look right and see him in my lane, a foot away from me going maybe 15 mph faster than me.

I think, ah, he's going straight on and I had positioned myself to the left he was taking advantage of the extra road I'd given him.

Nope, he's taking the same exit as me, no indication from him, he pulls in front of me and pretty much cuts me off.

I would've thought being a biker he would have realised how dangerous it can be to ride in my blindspot (or a cars for that matter) and also to cut infront of me when I'm taking the same exit.

Also, what If I had decided to drop a gear and go straight on?

He was on an old muscle bike that looked haggard. I thought it looked cool, but I got the impression he was trying to show me he was faster or something.

https://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a324/david_m213/Overtaking.jpg

To make things clearer, my bike is the blue one with the indicators on. I don't think the cutting off was as close as the paint diagram seems and it wasn't as much a worry because the riding next to me made me think "what's this guy up to?" and keep away from him.

I don't know maybe I'm wrong about this. Can anyone tell me what they think about it. I didn't like him passing me in my lane a foot away from me. I thought that was too risky. What do you guys think?

I could be wrong, but for me to see him I had to do a lifesaver right when I realised he was missing from my mirrors and I hadn't seen him pass in lane 2.

This isn't so much a "dangerous bikers" moan. I know that many people interpret other peoples riding to be dangerous when they don't realise what they are doing could be reasonably safe (the "blind" bend overtakes, that could actually be seen round by the biker). I'm more just looking to see what you think about his or my riding and what should or could have been done differently. Maybe I shouldn't have positioned myself to the left and stayed in the centre or even right of centre. I ride normally right of centre quite close to the broken whitte lines in lane 1 normally, moving my position over towards the centre when I see something approaching in lane 2 in my mirror.

What do you guys think?

A mate of a mate that rides with us occasionally has done that more than once on me, not always at turn offs though, sometimes he just over takes to fucking close to me for my liking, last time he did it was coming back from Bridgnorth a couple of weeks back, I told him if he did it again I'd kick him off the fucker, he hasn't done it since...

Your experience though could be a few things, he felt like you were holding him up so blasted round you, he only just realised that was his turn off as well and realised he'd been a cock after the event, or he was just a cock...

A stranger on a bike, that not on.
But with people you ride with regular, depends on how comfortable you are with them.

Some people i ride with we could be very close and not be fazed. But others don't like it.

We have been known to ride past each other and a slap on the lid or punch in the arm. But we are weird.

Playing games on a ride is awesome. Nicking keys at lights, kill switch at lights, kicking their gear pedal at lights. Its all fun and games. Laughing

Don't get me wrong, the two lads I ride with and me do shit like that, but the bloke I'm on about has got absolutely NO spacial awareness, to the point that I'm amazed he hasn't come a serious pisser before...

We'll overtake when there's a good clear run, he'll overtake when nobody else would, he'll plod along behind then come screaming past you when there's no need, he can't corner for toffee and the other day he went round an island on the inside lane then went straight across three lanes to turn off left, how the cars and the wagon behind missed him I have no idea, his standard response is " I've been riding twenty odd years, I know what I'm doing "...

He's a fucking liabilty, if he comes out now he stays away from me, well away...If he comes off his own, fair enough, if he causes me to come off mine I'll bounce him...

i had some little knob on a ped ride up the inside of me a few times on the way home the other night, kept riding right up the inside, not trying to overtake though, just kept getting alongside and grinning at me like a twat!
i just dropped a gear and fooked off but the urge to give him a swift boot to his front wheelinto the ditch was very strong!
there are some right knobs about at the min!

Agreed if its someone i don't know i will signal to them to back the hell off.

When im out with spr everyone of us knows to check our blind spot before doing anything its kinda an unwritten rule with the group after a little issue we had at the wirral egg run last year.

When we are in town we ride closer together strength in numbers and all that. So we need to be on our toes and check your blind spot every time if you change position.
When were out in NSL zones we ride spaced out and staggered with a overtake on the right only rule but still checking out blind spots for any tag along riders we dont know.

This is a concern of mine, especially in the summer months when there are a lot of riders around who seem prepared to take more risk, dare I say it liberties with other riders.

I think the only thing you could have done "better" is to have maintained your position in the lane until you turned on to the slip road. By that I mean turn in from the centre of the lane to the centre of the slip road.

This would have meant you were more dominant in the lane, thought obviously not text book it may have made him think twice about his manouvre.

However, if he's reckless then he would probably have over-taken you on the left or right depending on where he thought there was more advantage, probably the left because of the hard-shoulder.

I know it's easy in hind-sight to say don't be intimidated, but sometimes the best thing to do is maintain your position and speed and let these people get on with it, try and put yourself as far away as possible from the potential accident.

And to my mind the guy just lacked manners, which means you'd never get him to see his error anyway.

What LeeR said. Thumbs Up

Maintain center of lane.
No corner cutting.
Center of exit lane.

I don't know but the bottom of the numberplate was cut off in a rounded shape. It looked more melted than cut though tbh.

Happens all the time to me on the 125. Must be some sort of compensation for penis-envy on their part. Meh. Mr. Green

There lies your problem, if you had stayed where you were in a safe road position, then he would not be able to take the space to cause you an issue. You invited him into your driving zone by moving left.

Ride for yourself, its no skin off your back if he has to wait a whole 2 seconds longer, but it could quite literally be skin off your back if you allow him to bully your riding.

Simple solution - treat ALL road users as complete dickheads, expect everyone to perform stupid, unnecessary and dangerous manoeuvres right in front of you with no concern for anyone else on the road.

I genuinely believe that the vast majority of road-users disconnect their brains when the key turns in the ignition. Treat them like the mindless, myopic morons that they (usually) are, you won't go far wrong.

The danger comes from crediting them with some sort of road-sense....and in fact any common sense at all.

Thumbs Up

I hate bikes overtaking whilst still in my lane. One of the lads in the club had someone on an R1 clip his elbow last year. He wasn't happy.

When I rideout with my other half we quite often share lanes and pull up together at traffic lights for a chat, but my space is my space lol Some of the 'riding' I have seen from other bikers is just, well, stupid! Im quite happy being in traffic but others seem to be in such a rush lol Smile

[quote="david_m213"I think, ah, he's going straight on and I had positioned myself to the left he was taking advantage of the extra road I'd given him."

I agree with a previous poster, in that if you give someone room, 9 times out of ten they will take it, human nature, regardless of what you are riding or driving or what they are riding or driving for that matter, and regardless of whether or not it is appropriate to overtake. Maintain your right of way, don't let other road users intimidate you, and most won't be tempted to try to pass when they shouldn't.

The same applies when approaching obstructions like cars parked in the road - if you move over to the left, vehicles coming the other way will interpret that as you making space for them to proceed when they ought not to. Always keep central - it might annoy impatient road users, but that's better than risking getting sideswiped by them or the door of the parked car swinging open in your path. If it's your right of way, have it.
