Lost road tax

Gutted, I got back and saw my tax disk holder from the rear of the bike had snapped just below the bolt.
Had 8 full months left on it.

I did some googling and it appears I need to get and fill in a V20 forma nd go to my nearest DVLA and pay £7 for a replacement.

Does that sound right?

Would I need to take any other documents or ID?

I wouldn't even bother getting a new tax disc. Leave the broken bit of tax disc holder fitted to your bike and in the unlikely case you get pulled over, plead ignorance and say it must have happened recently.

Strangely I just got back from doing minor maintainance on my bikes (filling up scottoiler, lube chain checking pressures etc.) and I just changed my discs. I haven't displayed a tax disc for about 3 years now on any of my bikes. I have been pulled a few times and given points twice and they never mentioned the tax disc.

I had the tax under my seat on the TDM pretty much since I bought it, The tax disc under my seat expired in 09, I have had an 10 disc in my docs folder and the 11 disc was floating around the kitchen for a while seeing as I had the seat of I changed the disc. The 'Four hasn't even got and out of date disc the actual disc is in my docs folder.

I having it on display is just another thing to fall off/get nicked/get water damaged (why I took the disc off of the 'Four in the first place) Plus they look ugly.

The old bill can check on the computer weather it's taxed and will probably know it is not before they have even decided to give you a tug.

yep, in this day and age the fuzz have enough radio gadgetry to tell how hairy yr nuts are so they shouldnt have any trouble checking if yr bike is taxed.

I'd leave it for now and jst worry about it when the tax date comes by


having said that, i have no clue if they can do this so dont take my word for it heh.

I think you can get prosecuted for for not displaying a tax disc even if you have bought one previously.

I am a bit of a worrier and for £7 I think I would rather get a replacement if it is possible.

The old holder that came with the bike was a cheap plastic one, I moved it today becasue they had fitted it to my chain guard that wont fit now because I fitted a bigger sprocket.
So I moved it between the grab rail and helmet lock and obviously did the nut up too tight.
I think I lost it when I went over a bridge too fast and took off.

I am going to get an annodised metal one or chrome for £5.50.

i've not had a disk on my cbr for months since i lost it. Worse case just tell them it was there the last time you checked and that some scum must have nicked it Honestly its not even worth the £7 i've been driving my gsxr without tax at all for the past week, since i have not received the V5 yet and i need the bike.

Then again its up to you, if you have the money then get it replaced.

This is the reason why my tax disc stays tucked away in my wallet and always will. I have never put a tax disc on any of my bikes and never will. My brother has had 2 tax discs stolen within two weeks by little scrotes, then they came back for the bike.

I pay for my tax not the cops, so i should be able to put it where i like. You don't have to display your wage slip when you get payed to make shure you are paying tax.

I do have a couple of friends that were summoned to court for not displaying their motorcycle road tax.

It was also on one of the digital channels last night some guy got fined for not displaying.

Never had one on any bike apart from the hornet. (only because the dealer put it there)

I don't worry, If you get tugged or someone reports you for not having it displayed, can't you plead ignorance. "If must have been stolen that day" etc.

I have the tax disk and holder for the Bandit stashed under the seat - it's been under there since the day after I bought the bike.

To be honest I think it wasn't even displayed when I took the bike for an MOT recently

tax discs can no longer be cashed in by third parties such as dealers, as a car dealer our group used to make thousands in claiming tax back on part exchanges, now we cant do it. only the resgistered keeper can cash in a tax disc, thus rendering them useless to a theif. its a silly system, it should all be computerised or even better scapped and put on the price of fuel, that way u drive/ride more, u pay more for the roads. fair simple but never going to happen over here. the dvla has waayyy to many busibodies in work and couldnt possibly fire achbal and jesminda in bangalore at the call centres they use, remember, its unethical.... bollocks.

hands up who has ever been into a dvla local office? case rested. for those who havent, its bloody chaos. this form then that form then this que and now take a ticket and sit next to the fat smelly guy and wait your turn, all the while 3 million people sitting abot behind the scenes clicking mice and eating tesco sandwhiches, all there so then can print you a tax disc and check your documents..... were a nation, a world, of online. why cant it all just be done here? not just tax, transfers or number plates (it takes 7 working days! 7! to swap a number over thats 9 days of your life waiting for an unskilled 30 something to stamp two bits of paper and do a bit of data entry...

I got a £60 fine for failure to display a £15 tax disc.

It was my birthday and I had got a nice second hand RST jacket from my sister (I chose it beforehand) and it was my first time wearing it. (I keep my taxdisc in my pocket).

I got pulled over and gave no cheek or any of that. The bike cop pulled me and my friend and said "so who's the one with the full licence?" and he was clearly annoyed that I had one.

I thought if I told him the truth about my tax disc then he'd let me off. Nah, he was an arse. Now I know it's better just to lie because no matter how sorry you look and tell the truth, they'll probably fine you anyway.

If I was the threadstarter I'd get another tax disc cos chances are he'll bump into that jobsworth copper.

Yeah I went to the DVLA office yesterday, took my ticket, waited my turn, paid my £7 and got another disc.
Quite painless really. The office were friendly and efficient.
