I have noticed on BCF and many other forums that the voting intentions of people tend to be dictated by age. The younger members tend to support the socialists and the older members tend to back the right-wing parties. I'm not sure why this is the case but I am reminded of an often reworked quote:

Not to be a socialist at the age of 20 is proof of want of heart; to be one at the age of 30 is proof of want of head.

Probably because Hooray Henrys and Henriettas aren't on BCF because daddy's bought them their first Porsche/Mini Cooper/BMW/etc.

Younger people are generally poorer (prime earning years are supposed to be 30-45 years old) thus young people vote with idealism, while older people vote with their wallets.

I think that younger people also tend to be more idealistic because they havent got the cynicism that comes with seeing the same old shit put in a different way, I know I was... That said I'm 35 now, and couldn't bring myself to vote tory Thumbs Up

I'm the same age and I couldn't bring myself to vote labour. I think it might be a mixture though with young folk, idealism with a hint 'but I have rights...'

I've never voted labour, I just can't. I believe you make your own way in life, I absolutely cannot agree with the state somehow dictating how much you earn or what you are entitled to, its just not on.

I'm not a right winger though, more compassionate conservatism/capitalism. If you have the where-with-all to look after yourself and your own, you should then look at how you can help others up, up to that point though, you do the best you can for yourself and your family.

At the end of the day, bankrupting yourself to 'help' others (as we seem to have partially done) isn't sustainable. I think the trouble with people these days, is they're a bit shit at identifying the point at which they have enough.

Other than that, socialism is a great hiding place for the lazy, unambitious and irresponsible. (Although I also understand capitalism is a great place for the greedy and cruel to hide, but atleast the side effects can be more positive.)

Thumbs Up

It's 'cos us oldies (39 at the weekend) can (just about) remember the complete fucking cock-up Labour made of it last time. I was only 8 in '79 but still remember the huge festering piles of rubbish everywhere because of the strikes, and the flat over the shop my parents had just bought that we were only supposed to be living in for 6 months and ended up there for 6 or 7 years as interest rates went through the roof.

And now, after they've had another go, we're starting to see a pattern here.

The first sentence I read as: build us back up via the hard, but sensible/necessary path, get lots of people pissed off with the hard path, watch labour throw it all away again.

But I'm with you on the second point Wink
