Avon Tyres

So I'm back on the market for a front tyre again

I've been running a Michelin PR2 and it's lasted well and I liked it , but a new one is gonna cost £110 fully fitted.

The same place is selling an Avon Roadrider AM26 for £77 fully fitted.

Anyone had experience of Avon tyres?

BTW the wheel /tyre size is 120/70 ZR17.

Only used them once - Avon AV46? I believe...

Anyway they were okay in the dry but in slippery conditions they were a bit shit. Mind you that was 8 years ago.. perhaps they've improved?

Thanks Kris . So hard to tell with tyres untill you get them on the bike .
I know Avon make a some decent quality car tyres , I'm always a bit reluctant changing tyre type on the bike though

Has a set of storms fitted and a puncture after 1000 miles fucked the back one beyond repair so i went back to 021's
Having another go with storm 2's and they are better, feel smoother on the road, grip better and hopefully won't self destruct when punctured.
They last 20% less on mileage but have a saving of 30% on price
Also not sure if the tyre you're thinking of is included but most of avons bike tyres are covered by a free replacement if you get a puncture before you use 1mm of tread

The roadrider is a commuter tyre. I have them on my CB500, I must have got close to 10k on them and they've got plenty of life left on them.

They're cheap and cheerful, but I'm not especially fond of them in the wet.

Never had a good avon - they keep the wheel above the road, but all the ones I've used have all been decently lacking in grip in adverse conditions or near the limit; where comparble tyres from big companies work a lot better.
Haven't tried any of their really new ones, though.

I don't ride that much in the wet , but I do like to push it in the corners and when I ride it's in a rather , shall we say 'spirited' fashion I wear out the sides of the tyres long before the centre

Maybe the Avon Storm2 would be a better bet.

Slightly off topic , has anyone found a Michelin PR2 or Bridgestone 020/021 for a better price than £110. If the price difference was big enough I'd fit it myself

If you're not bothered by having tyres last ages, I'd definitely suggest Diabolo Corsas and Diablo Corsa IIIs.

I do a bit over 100 miles a week, which means I've expecting to need two sets of Corsa IIIs a year if I was to get new tyres each time - that's on a GSXR1000, mostly commuting. Will see how well they do as the rear is dual compound; but then I do tend to 'use' the throttle and there's lots of traffic lights to use it at.

I ran a pair of road riders on my GS through the winter, they wore well, griped just fine and were perfectly stable, they always felt a little numb though, maybe even vague.

I've recently had Avon Storm 2's fitted, had a puncture just over 300 miles, don't think it would of mattered which tyre I had on it still would of been in need of repair.
I can say though that they beat the 021's hands down on both wet and dry grip, they're smoother and really confidence inspiring. Can't comment on the mileage just yet though but as long as they last a decent amount of miles I'll be sticking with these from now on

I've got Storms on the Blackbird and I like them, wet or dry they're fine. I had the AV45/AV46 pair on before them and never had a moments concern with them either.

Have used Avon Viper VP2's before.

Highly reccomended and feel alot like the Diablo corsa's.

Suprisingly good in the wet aswell. (only tyres ive had the confidence in to kneedown in the wet)

Ive had a few sets of the AV45/46 Azaros and loved em.

I even found some cheap old stock AV35/36s which went on my ZX1100E and they were fine.

Used to get between 1.5k and 2k miles out of a set of Dragon Supercorsa Pro's on the TLR.

I could justify replacing them frequently for the amount of grip they provided.

Have used a matched pair of roadriders on the old 750 and found it handled much better, got a roadrider on the front of the ratchop aswell and that thing feels stable as hell on the front end through corners.


They give plenty of warning when your being a cock in the dry, but trust me they are not very forgiving in the wet, perfectly rideable, but sensibly, hooliganism in the wet will result in you lying on your arse in a gutter as I found out.

Roadriders are good for older bikes with oddball tyre sizes.
My mate Duncan rated them well as road tyres on his old RD500.

I tend to believe what Duncan says with this sort of thing because he is a keen and experienced racer and certainly the fastest person on two wheels I personally know.

I put Avon Storms on the ZZR600. Brilliant in heavy rain. OK in the
dry. But, all-round, much better than Avon Azaros that were on
before.

I've got Avon Roadriders on the FZ600. I have trouble getting
and maintaining heat in them, particularly the rear. Seem to be
wearing well, though. I think I will try some Pirelli Sport Demons
when these need replacing, as the Avons don't inspire confidence.

I have an Avon Azaro fitted to the front of the Bandit - already fitted when I bought the bike 6 months ago...

I've always used Bridgestone in the past, and even though I've ridden the bike thru the winter I'm still not 100% confident with the grip from the Avon... I'll be changing it for a Bridgestone within the next month or so.
