PostPosted: 18:25 - 07 May 2010    Post subject: r6 to r1? Reply with quote

over the last few months ive been thinking about selling up my 02 r6 for either a 07 plate or 06/07 r1. ive had my r6 for 2 years now and ride it pretty much to its limits and love to throw it round the bends.
i was thinking is the r1 as nimble as a r6 or am i gona see a large hike in handling and weight?
i did look at the specs and my shape r6 is pretty much the same weight as the r1. would it be just as easy to get the old knee down on the bends?

also for any r1 gurus out there whats the best shape 06 or 07/08?

thanks

Always thought they're the best shape R1s. Really not into the newer look ones.

07/08 models got 4 valves per cylinder on their heads instead of their 5 valve design. They've got 6 pot radial brakes and other features. I prefer the look of the 07/08 ones however. Their ram air intake looks more angular. And the headlights look meaner.

R1 handling shouldn't be significantly worse/slower than the r6.
However be careful about saying you can ride a bike to it's limits around here Wink.

If you really are happy to regularly make full use of the engine - always in the powerband, going through the gears - the reality is that the r1 won't be massively faster.
Litre bikes make it easier to go fast, but if you already go fast on a 600, it's not a massive difference - they can stay going faster for longer, but an r6 should still get to 120mph pretty quickly as it is!

Check the ad in for sale... bigger chicken strips than my 125 Wink

Are you sure you dont just max it out alot, rather than ride to its full, theres still alot of rubber to scrub, but thats just my opinion.

Before you consider chopping it in, get yourself on a trackday/ more trackdays if you really think you're riding it to it's limits.

The handling won't be noticably worse, though you may find it a bit more 'neutral' (haven't ridden one, but that's the general way modern bikes are going in my experience.)
Still, as I say - if you are making full use of the revs, then it'll just mean you can be lazier (which I personally don't find 'fun', I decided) not really much faster.

What bothers you about the handling? I thought r6s were meant to have cracking handling and turn in? If your sick of revving the nuts out of the bike then I can see why you want to move up. You can ride at the same speed on a litre bike but in a lazier fashion (less hectic and screaming).
But if your main issue is handling why dont you spend some cash getting the suspension setup. Realistically you shouldnt be able to outhandle an r6 and a modern r1 is surely not going to be much different?

Yes my bad I misinterpreted. Still, as said 2002 r6, 2006 r1 wont be much in it. Probably quite similar in size and maybe a handful of kg heavier so very much on par id think?

The 04-06 R1 (5VY model) is a great bike and I personally think its the best looking motorbike ever created so far.

It handles great however these ones are known and i have had 3 so far that when you whack open the throttle in first gear there is a slight delay but it still goes very fast and gets even more rapid above 7000rpm.

On my 2 previous 04-06 R1 i down geared the gearing by having 15 teeth on the front sprocket which made the acceleration extremely fast, so fast that the bike would wheelie in 3rd gear on just the throttle from as little as 6000rpm and would wheelie in 4th gear from the clutch (always wear a nappy when doing this!)
However this sort of gearing made the bike drink petrol which gave me only 80 miles before reserve when it should be about 110 miles before reserve doing town/city riding.

Also had a speedo healer (made by Healtec) on which was good at giving me a pretty accurate speedo reading as down gearing makes your speedo misread alot and also increases your mileage (e,g 85mph will be 78 mph, the misread gets worse the faster you go as 185mph was actually 162mph on mine).

Im now on my third 04 R1 as my last one was stolen (pics soon to come getting another spray job) and I have left the gearing on this one standard for now.

Power wise there is a huge difference between this and the R1 and R6 anyone who states that there is not has only ridden an R1 with the wind blowing in his face and green fields around him with the sun on his back being all alone for it was in his dream he felt such a thing.
The way we can abuse an R6 cannot be done easily on an R1 you whack the throttle open without thinking then the rear of that car in front will appear as if out of nowhere in an instant!
For me it feels great to just open the throttle and the power is just instantly there, its like a constant power band from tick over which feels like its super turbo charged the higher the rpm gets.

The way the tank is moulded around the crotch area is good as it lets me get my feet almost flat on the ground as im only 5"4"

The seat storage is enough to get a 1.5 metre chain in with fiddling about but if you have an alarm unit in there it gets harder to fit a chain inside there.

The instrument panel is great you can change the brightness of the screen and adjust the rev limiter light.

For me I love the sound of akarpovics on this bike which is what I have on at the moment.

This is one hell of a fast bike but the GSXR 1000 k6 felt even faster to me shame I think all the new GSXR shapes are ugly.

As for the 07-08 R1 I honestly could not feel any difference in power between the two they felt like the same bike to me but bear in mind I ride on the road and am not a track day biker who would probably spot every difference.
The 07-08 R1 has a lot more diiferent things to it when compared to the 04-06 R1

Also their was a recall done on the 04-06 R1 to change the TPS sensor and on my first one this was faulty causing the bike to cut out which happened to me once on a bend and was a hairy moment luckily that day I was wearing a nappy so my jeans managed to stay clean.
To check the recall work has been done there should be a punch hole mark on the frame where the frame number is just above one of the letters.

I love the 04-06 R1 and despite my Suzuki GSXR 1000 K1 feeling alot faster throughout the rev range I prefer my R1

Did I mention that the standard breaks feel really good.

I came from a 00 R1 to a 04 R1 and although the 00 R1 felt faster I dont miss the 00 R1 it had crap brakes and without a steering damper high speed runs felt scary but I took comfort in wearing a nappy at least.

As for the cost of them now they range from £4000 to £5200, I would recommend you budget for about £4300 as they are out there some are just way over priced.
Considering that I bought my first 04 R1 in October 2007 for £4400 and in March 2010 I paid £4350 for my current through haggling, just shows that prices have remained steady for the past 3 years.

I cant comment too much on the 07-08 R1 as i have not owned one nor will I ever as think they are ugly despite the fact it is a better bike than the 04-06 R1 due to all the technical improvements.

Also just too add on the 04-06 R1 if your battery ever gets low and you need to remove it to charge it you will have to remove the seat and the petrol tank, yes the petrol tank this R1 is a nightmare when removing the battery so is changing the spark plugs on this bike, but otherwise all is fine.

At About 26000miles the valve clearences need to be checked or replaced.

When the temperature gets to 105 the fans turn on and in the summer you really will feel the heat from the exhaust on your legs but in winter this heat is most welcome!

Ok my essay is done!
