Which bike for comfort?

Hi,

I am about to get rid of my FZ6 (I dont like it at motorway speeds as the fairings are as good as useless), and buy one of the three below.

Honda VFR 800 VTEC
Triumph Sprint ST 1050
Honda Super Blackbird CBR XX1100

I am just wondering what are peoples thoughts on which would be the most comfortable for me when touring and also for the odd day out on the back roads?

I am 6ft and 15.5 stone so i'm a bit wary of putting too much strain on my wrists.


Obviously I will road test each one in time, but I would also very much appreciate the voice of experience.

Can only speak for the Sprint, but I've happily done 10+ hours in the seat and felt just fine. Get the touring screen like I've got on mine and it's lovely.

i would ignore all those bikes and go for an adventure tourer

firstly im 6'4" and 16 stone

a bmw gs series bike,
i rode the 1150 gs

for a day, and apart from the weight, which you don't notice when riding, it was a all around great machine,
and since then have ridden the 1200gs and 1250gs
https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gallery%20B/BMW%20R1200GS%2007.jpg which are a refined version of the same bike, my opinion of the bmw's is pretty good, i probably wouldnt own one myself as i prefer a little more dirt orientation. the down fall of the bmw's is that you can't see the front wheel, because of that stupid peak, but thats not an issue for road riding, i would prefer a 21" front wheel as well.

failing a bmw and the stigma attached you could also go for
the triumph tiger,
now out of all the big adventure bikes this is my fav.
its big comfy and the engine is a pearl,

i prefer the older ones but the new ones are pretty tasty as well,
the tiger goes pretty well off road, but unlike the bmw it doesn't pretend its an off road bike, its a big road bike,

i hated the looks of this, but the engine is very nice, i made the mistake of taking one off road, and well put a nice big dent in thje exhaust (shakes head) it really has no off road capability at all,
the 17" wheels just arn't made for it, and not nearly enough clearance,
on the road, it was a good bike, but has quite a low seat height, and felt a bit small, not my cup of tea

next on the list is a xlv1000 varadero

it has a bit of a cult following, mainly the residue from the really good xlv750 the mighty trans alp,

which really was a very impressivly built bike, unfortuatly the 1000 is far too plasticy, and can't take a beating like the old 750,
the 1000 is hondas answer to suzukis vstrom... essentially just a big road bike. which ain't a bad thing.

of course we can't leave out yamaha's 90's flagship adventure tourer

the Super Tenere xtz750. well what can i say... beutiful parallel twin engine, its a shame they fucked it up so badly with the new
XT1200Z Super Ténéré (i havn't ridden one so really shouldn't be so biased to the plastic fantastic tourer )


they are plenty more adventure tourers out there, with that focus on long distance super comfy ride and and upright riding position.


sorry bit of a boring post on my behalf, but i think you shopuld be looking in the adventure touring sector for your next bike

Can get you a decent price on a well looked after blackbird, just pm me.
they are comfy...but after 5-6hours expect to get a bit of a numb arse unless you install a gel pad

I'd say the downfall of the big beemers is their weight is closer to a small car than a dirt bike .

If I was looking for a heavy adventure tourer, I would consider a 950/990 adventure, possibly a F800GS (though all the stuff I've read suggests it doesn't really match up to the KTM) or maybe a 900 elephant if I was on a budget.

However, to be fair, these aren't disadvantages for the road - however I think I'll go for my normal answer of 'GSXR1000 with higher bars/low pegs' - which I was also saying before I got one too . All the easy to use power, handling and not too hard mod to make it comfortable for most people.

I am virtually the same height and weight as you and have a GSXR1000 K8 with a double bubble screen and a renntec rack on the back (when needed - four bolts under the seat / cowl to put on). Have the footpegs set to the lowest setting. Absolutely comfy, plenty of power and fun on the back roads. With the rack and a pillion seat pack, enough space to go touring as long as you don't overpack.

I would be tempted by the Blackbird but can't get new (or nearly) anymore. Prior to the GSXR I had a Triumph Tiger - this has the same engine as the Sprint 1050 and you can get loads on this. It's a good handling bike and super comfy (as upright riding position). My only complaint was the clunky gearbox - the GSXR's is smooth as silk in comparison (or I suspect any jap bike).
