Has anyone watched the How to Live a Simple Life on the iPlayer?

Made me think a lot how nice it would be live like that and how we have become slaves to living for money...

I feel I am turning about hippy-ish but it sounds a good life to me, I sometimes wonder if I really need a lot of 'stuff.' And some of the 'stuff' I just have to have. I am not that bad in comparison to some people however thinking about I have bought some stuff just to have. Such as some of my DVDs I have just bought to have. I have bought them and not watched them. Why? Because it is nice to have a DVD collection, and I like having a book collection but is any of it really necessary?

I guess not having experienced doing a full time job as a living my sway my views and you can argue the money you earn gives you the resources to do things. However I think some people place money and owning stuff to highly...

It is a trap I never want to fall into, however I can see it happening easily. There are somethings I'd love to have but in owning them I'd have no real use for them, they'd be purely for my own enjoyment and bear no-meaning on an achievement for life. They might give you status, but is gaining status through owning something really an achievement at all? I'd say a worth while achievement is for having status for something you have done. My flat mate has a bedroom, he has decorated some of it and brought his owning furnishing etc. He gets status from people's comments and what they think of him, but what does it really mean having a nice looking bedroom? Any ornaments I have in my bedroom have been bought by other people for me as I don't see the point in spending money on them.

The video does have quite a few references to religious things as the guy is a vicar... And I guess that also makes it easier for him to get stuff for free.. But it still looks like a good life.

I don't think I could ever give up money totally, but maybe earning just enough to get by. Realistically you need money to pay for certain services due to the world we live in. However earning just enough for these services and then spending the rest of your time doing things to get by sounds like a hard but rewarding life style.

Hmm...

I've just started watching the film, and I'd agree that buying things you don't really need can be a habit worth breaking, but I cant take seriously any man who wears a bead necklace.

I often think of things like this from the perspective of extra terrestrials Laughing Imagine something coming to Earth and seeing everything we do, spending a third of your working life at work and in exchange receiving some numbers on a screen, spending a third of your life sleeping, a government telling us what we can and can't do, watching TV and playing video games to just pass the last third of time by, fighting each other in wars, everything we do is weird.

In exchange for this weird society we get technological advances, but I can't really see any other benefits. We're the only living thing on Earth that lives like this and it's pretty unnatural.

I'll have a watch of the documentary Thumbs Up
