There's three types of people in this world, those who can count, and those who can't.

I get bored in binary after about, erm, 8 or 9

(does 01 count as 1, or does it start at 1 with 1?)

ariel neglected to mention an explanation of binary

our normal number system uses separate columns for units, tens hundreds thousands etc

binary also has columns, but its for 1s, 2s, 4s, 8s, 16s

now look back at charlie's examples

binary is used in electronics as on represents 1 and off represents 0

binary wrist watches are available for the suitably geeky

Thank you Colin, you have almost entirely filled my [knowledge] gap Shocked

Obviously it was beyond me even in those early days.

I understood the 0 = off and 1 = on concept, but thats about all.

But why are there minus 0's in the 16 space (and not anywhere else)?

(and is there a 32 space when all the 16 spaces are is filled, etc. etc.,

the minus was to pad out the space, to make it inline with the column numbers....

Although you can do minus number in binary however there is no point adding more complexity.

And yes, once you have got all 1's you add on another 'bit' to let you go larger:

16 8 4 2 1
>1 1 1 1 1 = 31 (16+8+4+2+1) So 16 is on, 8 is on, 4 is on, 2 is on and 1 is on. Add all of these together and you get the value.

32 16 8 4 2 1
>1 0 0 0 0 0 = 32 (32+0+0+0+0+0) Here, 32 is on, everything else is off; so the value represented here is 32.

You add up all the numbers that are 'on'.

Normally you use 8 bits as this is called one 'byte', and yes; 4 bits are called a 'nibble'

This has been quite educational Thumbs Up , can I now partake in binary jokes in the future?

I skipped the binary chapter in the 11+ study book.

Hi

To go with the above, 4 bits (being a nibble) gives a number between 0 and 15 which is a hexadecimal number, hence why hex is commonly use (8 bits will give you a hex number between 00 and FF).

WildGoose wrote:

What base is 11+ in? 3 represented in binary, 17 represented in hex?

All the best
