Was sitting at work the other day and this question came up.
As usual, with these sort of questions, I had to try it and then answer.
Of course then you sit there and really can't remember how you do it regardless of how many times you run through it.

I've figured out that if I thumb start I cant get passed 4 without both the last 2 fingers coming up.

When my work colleague said she starts with her little finger first, i thought how weird......but it's actually easier.

So which way ?

It's not a strange a thought as it first appears, I noticed when in France that they extend just the thumb when they mean one, whereas we tend to extend the index finger.

I once held up my index finger meaning one, and said "...une, sil vous plait" and the arsey cow the other side of the counter tried to give me two. I suppose it's indicative of the the French that they would be so pedantic to a non-fluent French speaking Brit. Anyway, after some further conversation she held up her thumb and said "oh you mean one, why didn't you say" ffs!

Anyway, I count sequentially from left to right, left hand first, thumb to pinkie, seems obvious really...

From the pinkie to the thumb.
(I have limited mobility in my right thumb, which may have made a difference)

and I had a strange look from my work colleague when I held my hand up to check which method felt the most natural Laughing

Thumb to pinkie on left hand, but I actually move my left hand around the index finger on my right hand that is actually 'doing' the counting!!

Perplexing!! Confused

I count to five with my left hand and go thumb to little finger. Next question is though if you count to ten how do you do your six.

I go thumb to finger on my left hand and as I get to my right hand I go little finger to thumb.

Perhaps it's boredom?

I wonder if it depends on whether you play piano/keyboard....I count right thumb to pinky for 5

I start with pinky on left hand and work to pinky right hand for 10 if I know I'm going towards 10

otherwise tend to lead with right thumb to pinky 5 and then left pinky to thumb till 10

You can count to ten on one hand easily. Just start at ten and work backwards.

Counting to 31 on one hand is easy with a bit of practice. Either way, I start with my thumb.

[edit] OK, read the other thread now.
