.. you can only park in designated motorcycle parking bays, as following enquiries the Council have advised me in writing when querying where motorcycles can park that:

"motorcycles cannot park in either Residents or Pay & Display bays. They are only permitted to park in the designated Motorcycle bays which is free of charge."

Note that parking regulations in Brighton & Hove are strictly enforced, wardens work 24/7 and will not hesitate to ticket you.

So the Brighton Burn Up and any other event that brings motorcycles to Brighton really faces a bit of a problem as there are not enough bays to hold the usual number of bikers here, let alone a rally.

I suspect the Council will suggest that the Park & Ride scheme is used - park your bike outside Brighton then you can pay around £5 for the privilege of getting a bus in to the "city" and back. What fun.

Initially I thought I would complain to my MP and try to get it so motorbikes can park for free in Residents parking bays / Pay and Display bays. Then I remebered, Brighton is the only Green seat in the UK - no doubt any request relating to a motorised vehicle will fall on deaf ears and met with a suggestion to take up cycling.

Luckily I don't live in an area of Brighton where there is residents parking as then I wouldn't be able to park my bike outside my house, or even in my road (unless there's a motorcycle parking bay there).

Does anyone have any ideas on how Brighton and Hove Council's brainless policy about motorcycle parking could be changed?

You need to get a copy of the traffic orders for Brighton, I very much doubt they exclude bike parking specifically.

The info is in the public domain so a FOI is not required, should be able to view it at the council offices.

Cant see how Brighton can tell residents which vehicle they can or cant park, unless they will provide a free bike bay to each resident.


Edit: I would be very surprised if a council parking official was actually telling the truth and all orders were in place

Yup they're here https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/index.cfm?request=c1167614 looks like they can and have Motor Cycles are included and now lumped in as Motor Vehicles but the council refuses to issue a residents parking permit for them. I guess you can therefore park in Pay & Display (as now a Motor Vehicle) but if you don't Pay & Display (or the ticket gets nicked / blown away) you're liable for a fine for non display.

Also as far as I am aware only the city of London has provisions to prevent parking on pavements (where you are not causing an obstruction).
