Anyone toured Germany?

Afternoon all,

Thinking of doing a couple iof weeks in Germany in August but i can't find much in the way of reviews or write ups from people who have done the same. I have toured france, and spain so not keen to go there.

Can anyone whose been post opinions on germany, roads, sights, people areas to go etc?

There is only 1 tourist destination in the whole of Germany.

Hi,

I have toured Germany several times on the bike, although I can't say I'm an expert. Berlin I found to be a pleasant and relaxed city and I spent a couple days camping on the outskirts and 'commuting' in to see the sights.

The roads leading down to the Nurburgring are pretty good, but for stunning scenery and cracking alpine roads head down to the area around Berchtesgaden. There's the famous 'Eagles Nest' to visit and a couple of cheap but impressive toll roads through the mountains to blat round.

Beer is cheap, food is weird but on the whole decent, plenty of campsites. People are friendly but can be quite reserved (enormous sweeping generalisation there).

I've been going for years and love it.

Been to 'Cochem' in Germany, lovely valley area with some beautiful winding roads and views..

Theres a campsite there, can't remember the name off hand, but it was cheap (mostly because we left before they opened to take our money )

The ground is hard to pitch on though as its all slate underneath... still worth it though!

Its also fairly close to the Nurburgring

Roads are normally very good condition a joy to ride on, sweeping corners and good views. I like touring there. The motorways are not so good though, many 2 lanes and can be crowded. The unlimited ones are a bit intiminating though, sounds good but there is always someone faster and will come flying up to you so its difficult to see them.
The people are helpfull and friendly although might not speak English which surprised me but they were very helpfull.
Lots of campsites of a good standard.
I liked it and worth going back to. I was last there a couple of years ago in September in the black forest. It was so cold there was ice on my tent and bike in the morning.

I found the Rhine Valley interesting to explore by bike.
Following the river you can explore narrow winding roads up the sides for views along the valley and there are fantasy castles every half mile.
Good points already about the food being a bit *different* !
Driving standards are generally better than here I thought, generally good signposting - although I did get horribly lost for an hour in Mannheim - evening rush hour too...

Obviously theres the Black forest, but theres also "The route of clocks" a circular route which winds thru the black forest N roads

Autoroutes- Can be very good, but are mostly bad these days-busy, often only 2 lanes, and increasingly full with roadworks. Certainly no comparison with French Autoroutes, but then they are free.

Fuel available everywhere and garages open all hours. Just about cheaper than the UK, but it won't be long before they're the same price

Places to visit; Mosel valley, Rhine valley, Berlin, Schwarzwald, and of course the Alps. Bodensee(Lake Constanz) is also a lovely area. The north of Germany is also worth visiting, but also very flat! Nice beaches, but water tends to be a bit erm, fresh. Sylt and the neighbouring islands are very pleasant, and I've heard Rügen to the north(ish) of Berlin is very nice. I used to live in Kiel, which is not a bad city in itself, but it also has nice beaches, and pleasant surrounding countryside.

Food and drink- nothing to worry about...except maybe weisswurst

Also worth looking out for are Biker Friendly hotels.

Stayed in a couple and the facilities are excellent.

The Zur Post in Klotten on the Mosel has fantastic bike parking in the old wine cellar - space to dump your panniers and a drying room, fantastic food and a great range of wines and was only 45 euros full board per night.

There are cheaper and they are all over Germany.

Look out for Motorrad or Fahrrad on the signs

With 2E on his comment, Cochem is a beautiful area, we stayed at a campsite on the banks of the Mosel (we were within 6feet of the river bank with our tent). The roads around that area are well tarmaced and there are lots of beautiful twisty roads winding around mountains.
Down at Lake Constanz it is also beautiful, again we stayed at a campsite right on the lakeside at wasserburg so we had clear views across to Switzerland.
I would love the chance to go again, but I think I would like 2 weeks in Germany as opposed to the 3 days we spent there last year. I have dreams of spending more time in Eastern Germany, then coming back up the Black Forest to get home.

Visited Dusseldorf, Monchengladbach, Erkelenz and JHQ Rheindahlen some years ago, and found it to be a lovely, picturesque area.
VERY clean places, with a great community spirit.

Dunno specifically about bike touring the area but all the roads seemed to be very good quality

Look up a place called Kesselberg (very south of Bavaria). The road there is so good that it's actually banned to bikers on the weekends.

It's a free directory of tour operators but even if you don't book something it may give you a good idea of where to go!
