Just got back from takeing me and my girlfriend to a wedding reception in the depths of the derbyshire countryside, nice ride there, the ride back, wet, wet and dark... i'd have been in some trouble had i not got my uber lights of fogy doom, but it was still tricky to see...
One reason being my glasses, to stop the visor foging the visor needs to be up, when the visor is up the glasses get wet, then i have to put them a bit further down my nose so i can see over the top of them.. ( i could have just got away without useing them on my test but never ride without them, seeing as its required on my licence as well...)

So, can anyone think of a way arround this? i'd thought about geting contact lenses (for use only when i was rideing in the rain)... but appart from that there not much else i can think of...

first person who says get a car will be hit with a pointy stick, as will the first to suggest not rideing in the rain..

I find Holts anti mist/water repellant keep my visor from misting up in the rain, and make the rain run off the visor a lot easier.
Maybe worth a try? Or another anti mist type solution?

How about you stop being stingy and get contact lenses. I physically cant ride in glasses, they are too off putting and draw focus away from your peripheral vision (which i rely on heavily).
Contacts are £15 quid a month which includes solution, case and lenses... through the post! Go get them bad boys.
Unless you are uncomfortable with the concept of wedging plastic in your eye every morning. Trust me it gets piss easy, just persevere with the initial pain and then you get good and you train your eyes.

Plus it means you can fight Laughing

The only time I ride with my glasses is in the dark, in mid-Winter whne it is usually raining. To stop them steaming up just leave the visor open one notch.

I wear glasses on my bike and I use Holt's Anti-Mist once a week on them to stop them misting up and to repel water.

I do the same to my visor once a week too and it seems to do the job. Smile.

However I don't like wearing glasses though but my licence says I have to and I don't fancy touching my eyeballs to put lenses in Confused.

Laser eye treatment?

I have a friend who had this done and he swears by it. Might cost a bit up front but then you never have to wear glasses again.

(N.B. can only be used to correct certain types of defective vision)

Problem is with that is some proffesions don't take people on who've had it done, and me wanting to be a police officer is one of those professions Confused.

Huh? Not doubting you but never heard that before, why would they do that?

Do they also reject people who've had surgery to, say, correct a dodgy knee?

The vents do the job on my helmet when I'm wearing shades, not something advisable in winter

Avoid opening your visor like the plague, and learn to minimise breathing when you are not moving.

Numerous problems with this. Firstly it often screws up your night vision, making lights "flare" at night. There are also problems with diving and the like (some places will not let you do things which involve an unusual change in pressure). Also should they screw up your eyes doing the laser surgery then there is often little that they can do to correct the problem. Lastly you will, long term, just send your eyes the other way.

All the best

Keith

No treatment like this can be assured of 100% success however I think your post is vastly exhaggerating the problems. The most successful of the methods works by reshaping the cornea and carries little risk.

Certainly my friend who had it done now about five years ago reports none of the side-effects you describe.

My better half went diving in Aus around the great barrier reef area. They would not let anyone hire equipment and dive if they had had laser eye surgery. Degraded night vision is meant to be very common (and not correctable). Personally given the choice between wearing glasses or having a significient chance of perminantly screwed vision that could stop me driving (the UK has no licence category restricting you to driving during the day, so if you night vision is bad enough that you cannot drive after dark then you should loose your licence), I think I will stick with the glasses. Especially when the chances are I will just need glasses again in a few years.

All the best

Keith

I think it may depend on the type of treatment used. AFAIK there are no restrictions with the 'laser only' method once the full recovery period has passed.

It's certainly true that anyone may eventually need reading glasses as they get older as that is caused by weakening of the eye muscles which control focus, this cannot be corrected by laser treatment. However long or short sight problems caused by the shape of the cornea are permenantly corrected.

Contact lenses are the only way forwards my friend. That reminds me I need to start wearing them again. Glasses piss me off when I'm on the bike.

Never had a problem with my glasses on a bike, if my visor gets steamed up I just lift it up a touch.

I just don't wear mine and Praying that whatever objects I can't see, aren't really there Thumbs Up

Generally though, I would say get contact lenses. They are better for your eyesight in the long term anyway because there is less of a difference in the path of the corrected light rays.

NB. It is Not recommended advice to leave your glasses at home unless your glasses are as weak and unecessary as mine are.

As I understand it most people are myopic due to the shape of there eye, rather than problems with the lense. Shaving the top off the lense is just a possible way of attempting to correct this problem.

All the best

Keith (whose eyesight without glasses can be compared to that of a mole).

£6 a month, now that is good, where pray is that from?

Another vote for contact lenses from me.

I put mine in to ride, wear glasses all day at work, and put the lenses back in at night.

No problems with peripheral vision, no problems with steaming up, no problems taking my lid off.

My lenses are quite old though, so I need a new set, but as I only wear them for a couple of hours a day, I don't need to replenish them as often (or that is what I tell myself) (cue posts regarding permanent eye damage by over-using lenses). Rolling Eyes

It's a private opticians in Edinburgh city centre. My work has some sort of deal with them so I get free eye tests and they pay £50 towards my first lot of contact lenses. They only charge a couple of extra quid for different coloured prescription lenses. So I got some white ones on order. Smile

Coolio, I was thinking of some black ones for myself, just to scare pedestrians and cage drivers. However, now I have a dark visor, it would be a waste of money.

Might do it for a laugh though. Laughing

I ride with my visor half a click up, only a little water gets on to my lenses, and my visor stays clear. Never realy had a problem with my glases getting covered in water. The worst thing is when they slide down and i'm left looking over the top of them. Cant see a lot then!

With glasses I had the same problem as Jay ... they used to slide down and would look above the lenses.

Also had a problem with the sunshine as my glasses are not colour sensitive and do not change colour, I found it very hard with the glare ... os decided to wear contact lenses and sunglasses if needed.

Originally only for riding, now it is just under 6 months I got them and tend to wear cotnact lenses forthe majority of time and the glasses very occasionally!

Contact lenses are the way forward!!
