PostPosted: 15:59 - 09 May 2010    Post subject: Tax discs... Reply with quote

I've read some people say they put photocopies of their tax discs in the holder instead of originals, and I was wondering if this was legal?

I renewed my tax for the first time this month and was unable to remove the holder with my hex key. So instead I've secured a photocopy over the holder in a floppy cd case: I didn't want to use the original in case it came off or got wet. Keeping the original in another case on the bike.

Just wondering if this legit or not? I know you have to display a disc, but wasn't sure what the rules were re it being the original.

Thanks for any response!

Nick

Get a colour photocopy? Libraries are good for this cost 40pper colour page at my local library, also a bit of muck just a bit on the INSIDE of the glass cover should make it indistinguishable without really looking closely at it...

A friend did this once though and the tax disc holder was still stolen along with fake disc!

Its clearly not legal to the letter of the law as you are not displaying an actual tax disc.

I dont display mine after many were nicked, i either keep it in my wallet or at home.

This thread has come up quite a few times, some say keep it laminated of sorts stuck under your seat.

I figure they can check if you are taxed on their PNC and whatnot and you would have to be very arsey or come across a very arsey cop to do you for not displaying, besides. There was a tax disc on there when you left earlier wasent there Wink must have been stolen while you popped into the shops Wink

It's not strictly legal, but I'd guess that plod would probably be lenient as long as he wasn't having a bad day, and as long as you're not caught doing anything else dodgy Wink

I would say having a photocopied one is worse than having none at all if discovered....

Best remove the bolt too where you would normally mount it,

A cop very nearly did me for not displaying tax, when I said to him but it keeps getting stolen, he said you would say that wouldn't you, so I showed him the replaced tax disc which on the bottom circle says duplicate and he said alright and let me go.

I've scanned mine, added "Copy - Original with owner." and printed a copy. Never had a problem.

Tax discs are policed/enforced by DVLA now, one of the many things that Plod have been told to leave alone so councils and agencies can make money from sticking you on.

I'd be very surprised if you could find a police vehicle or constable in London that actually carries the form to report you for it. I suppose there might be a weary traffic car somewhere that likes to be the exception.

Not being shown as having paid your tax on the database in the plod car might help paint a picture of you if you've committed other offences, but if that's your only issue I doubt they'll even bother to look, let alone comment or take action.

Yes, but....

1. You haven't read the rest of it - they have the actual disc in their wallet or under the seat or something to show him (and indeed, PC Rozzer can check the database)
2. You're a pedboi, hence their giving you a hard time Razz

ok, thanks, not entirely clear, but I think I'll leave it as it is for now, and take it into the garage at some point to see if they can undo the bolt on my tax disc holder..

I always believed that the law covered 'Failure to Display' or something.
If it is not the actual disc you run a risk of some fcuking checking type (Speshal Police Cunt-stab-el) dipping you in it and the connect hassle of a producer.
Mine is stuck on the bike and never been theived yet. But it is dreadfully durty and faded now. Smile

https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10021514

Displaying your tax disc
Your vehicle tax disc must be displayed on the passenger side (kerb side) of the vehicle’s windscreen. If there’s no windscreen or you have a motorcycle or sidecar, you should display the tax disc on the kerb side of the vehicle.
A current tax disc must be displayed on the vehicle it was bought for. If you buy a new tax disc before your current tax disc expires, you should not display the new one until the old one has expired. The new tax disc is only valid from the first day of the month you have taxed from. The maximum penalty for failure to display a current tax disc is £200. The tax disc can not be transferred between vehicles.
If you use the electronic vehicle licensing service or tax by post at the end of the month, there’s now an exemption for not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month to allow time for the new disc to arrive in the post. While you are still waiting for your tax disc you will need to display your current tax disc. The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires.

This highlight how DVLA are such a shower Absolute Welsh Phannies.
Motor cycle must display on the Kerb Side.....

That is where mine is. (Bolted to the left engine pod). It is there so the cnuts have to lie down on the pavement to read it. Twisted Evil
