Chain slack question

My manual states there should be 35mm of play but doesn't say whether this is with me sitting on it or with no weight on it. Which one would it be?

Haven't had a bike in a few years so excuse me. Smile

It would be with the bike off the stand without you or anyone else sat sitting on it.

It really should say in the manual but it's usually on the sidestand, as soon as you sit on the bike it'll get significantly tighter.

If nothing's said assume it's on the sidestand. The only bike I've known that doesn't say that was my old RSV which specified on a paddock stand.

It depends on the OEM spec.

If in Doubt:
Adjust on the side stand.
Adjust on the Centre Stand (If fitted).
And adjust with the wheel on the road/floor/carpet.

I bet you a pound to a bucket of shite the average will be accommodated by the Tolerance in the adjustment.

Aim for the exact mid point. This allows for inaccuracy of your measurement.

And check with the wheel rotated to several positions to allow for tight spots.

Tbh when a bike is on a paddock or side stand, there isnt much weight on the shock anyway, when i do chains, i like to use a trolly jack and lift the rear wheel slightly (obviously i have slackend the axle and adjusters before hand) and then locate the tight spot then get it so i can press it up with my hand in its central point about 30-40mm.
I've done so many now i can generally tell when its going to be too tight or not, suzuki's are annoying because the final tightening of the axle adjust the chain aswell.

...and then with various nuts partly tightened (stop sniggering) sit on the bike without the stand and check (or get an assistant!) the chain slack when loaded. No idea what it should be but if there is no flex then it is too tight - just leave a little bit. Hope that helps (a bit!)
