Hi All

The exhaust on my GT250 is made out of really shite steel and rusts like hell.
Last year I took it to a local blasters who stripped it back to bare metal and then sprayed and cooked it with heat resistant paint.

it has held up fairly well but having ridden pretty much every day through winter, rain, ice, snow and slush has brought out the rust quite badly again.

Can anyone recommend the best way to prevent the rust?
I guess I'll never be able to stop it completely but i would prefer it to last a bit more than a year before going rusty again.

I was thinking zinc plating or something?
I certainly don't want to be doing it myself as I have wasted much money on VHT paint and rust proofing just to find it burns and flakes off Sad

Cheers!
Rich

No can do lest you change them for decent stainless pipes, the problem is with mild steel is you can blast them clean them up spray them with HT temp paint even wrap them if you are crazy.

But exhaust gases are corrosive and unless you are running something like a ThunderAce (which burns 50ml of oil ever 100km) then you can't protect it from the inside.

Ceramic coating is supposed to be good for rust proofing but is a specialist process, Some people are going down the ceramic route for streetfighters etc too so might be considered a bit tarty.

The exhaust will heat up to over 500 deg C on full chat.
The heat-cold cycles due to water spray on the hot pipes will shock any coating off the pipes over time.
If you are suffering with the image this creates for you then suck in and buy a stainless system.

They also tend to rot from the inside out.

Combustion of petrol produces water and carbon dioxide. Water and carbon dioxide react to make carbonic acid. Carbonic acid is an oxidising agent which supports the corrosion process.

Is there not a product you can periodically spray in the exhaust that could help prevent it rusting from the inside?

A rust preventative like WAXOIL.
But as soon as you run the engine this will burn off.

There is only one solution and that is fit a system that will not rot (as fast).
Anything made with ordinary Steel will dissolve through the corrosive action of gas and liquids it makes contact with during normal service just as Stinkers says.

Stainless will last many times longer.

But they cost many £s $s more than 'Standard'. (Edited for the Pedant: Normal Mild Steel. OK?)

I very much doubt an aftermarket Stainless system will be more than a new standard one.

Standard refers to normal steel rather than stainless.

My point still stands, its not splitting hairs, if the standard system is mild steel, you could get a stainless aftermarket one for cheaper.

When I got my full aftermarket stainless steel exhaust system for the bandit it was cheaper than a replacement exhaust from Suzuki Thumbs Up

Actually I was agreeing with you.

The Suzuki exhaust would use the standard steel in the collector box again.

That is why I decided to go for a full SS system Thumbs Up

Hi

You could possibly get it plated and that will make it last better than a normal unplated mild steel exhaust, but it won't be that good and I doubt anyone would plate a used exhaust.

Plenty of places around who can make up a stainless exhaust.

All the best

You seem to be missing my point,

You said something that is completely wrong, Aftermarket Stainless systems are usually cheaper than a standard replacement system from a dealer.

My TDM had a Stainless System as stock, I could buy an aftermarket one for less than dealer prices, My old GS500 had a mild steel system from stock, I could buy an Aftermarket stainless one for less than dealer prices.

I don't know why you are talking this so seriously I'm not even sure what you are arguing about, I'm just saying dealer prices for exhausts are huge and aftermarket ones are cheaper.

Calm Down Dear.

You can get exhaust ceramic coated inside and out, but it's not cheap. Pops up in bike mechanics from time to time.
