Flushing the engine

I'm carrying out a full service on the bike when i get back from holiday and instead of just changing the oil i want to make sure it's all good before puting shiny new stuff in.

Firstly, is it required? Secondly the engine has done 30,000 miles so will some old oil in there be beneficial?

Can someone talk me through the 'flushing' process?

Just change the oil and filter. Don't flush the engine, you'll cause more problems than you'll solve. If you think the engine is gunked up then just do regular frequent oil changes. Don't flush it as you might dislodge gunk from the engine which then can block oilways and cause oil starvation.

Heh - thanks. This was my worry. That by trying to clean it i'd cause more hassle than it's worth.

Fair do's - oil, filters and plugs. £80 just like that.

Hein Gericke have their Oil and free filter deal on right now.
Oil is good as.

And you also get a chance to get trapped into buying more kit you'll never find enough days to wear... Embarassed

A cheaper and safer way to flush an engine it to do two oil changes close together. If I have a particularly gunked up engine I do an oil change (not filter) and put in the cheapest oil I can find, then do another change about 200 miles later, this time with a new filter and possibly better oil (tend to use cheap oil and change it regularly instead though).
If it was particularly messy in there then the new oil will be pretty dark after 200 miles.

It would be better to put on a new filter at the first change.
The filter is absorbent and will collect a load of carbon whilst the cheap flushing oil is doing it's job.
May as well give the job more than half a chance if you are going to the hassle of doing it at all.

This. If you really want to flush it. Personally I wouldn't worry about it.
