Thought I'd mention that round here in Shropshire, we have noticed a sudden increase in the number of alleged 'scrap metal collectors' going round the estates. Just this week my wifes Auntie has had items stolen from her garden by two men passing themselves off as 'scrappies' when challenged by the people living next door.
The guy down the road found two men in a pick-up prowling around his 4x4, trying the doors etc. He challenged them and they came out with some story about 'thinking it might be up for sale' and today we heard about another guy near us having scaffolding stolen off his drive by two guys in a small white van. Just thought Id give folks in the Shropshire / West Midlands locality a heads up that these opportunists are doing the rounds! Keep you gear out of sight guys and girls Very Happy

Scrap men are absolute pickeys. They've went as far as nicking the metal drain covers from around here. I saw them go down my back lane looking in peoples back yards for stuff to nick. Usually some chav on the dole with his 14 year old kids on the back. Funny when they get caught by the police though. Mugs.

Someone helped themselves to an Almax Immobiliser chain, and my petrol chainsaw a couple of months ago. I wasn't using either of them regularly at the time, so it may have been a week or so before I realised they were missing.

I didn't make the connection at the time, but there had been some chavvy scrap dealers round the streets for the previous couple of days too.... Rolling Eyes

We get them in the works skip ALL THE TIME, we wouldn't mind that much, because when they take stuff, it takes longer to fill up skip = less money. It's just that they fucking wreck the place, bits of rubbish, opened bin bags, old food on the floor.

One day i'm gonna hide in the skip with the top half of this armour on:

And some Y-fronts on the bottom half, jump out when they open the skip and chase them down the street.

Been round here alot recently too! Noticed them eyeing up my bike !!!

(thing is my bike is right in my line of sight most of the day, and where they saw it, isn't where its usually kept. and if it is kept there over night, its in a locked garage)

Whoa thats confusing! Laughing

They regularly cruise past my missus' work, checking out the warehouse and vehicles. They practically drive into the warehouse door while making an exagerrated three-point turn so they can get a good look. The warehouse boys have started keeping a list of registrations. They also used to steal fuel from the trucks overnight!

Fucking scum.

Down in Hillingdon here, west london, huge increase in them in my area too. They pulled up in a car pickup , grabbed my missus car of the street and made off with it. The car had been sittin sorned around the corner for 2 months. Them 'do you want to sell this car for scrap' leaflets kept appearing on it. We gave up taking them off which was our downfall it seems cause the copper that we spoke to about it said if the leaflets still on the car when they pay it a visit they assume nobodys checking up on it. Lil buggers, insurance had run out a few days beforehand which she didnt renew which was a kick in the teeth too.

Moral of the story, if scrappers are in the area, make sure you take them 'do you want to sell for scrap' leaflets off your car.

Down here the pikeys come round to "collect scrap" ie scope out the place. Generally if you find them something to give them then you'll be alright but if you don't give them anything they'll be round to help themselves.

Are these scrap metal merchants members of the oppressed minority travelling community?

Those scrap metal people are little bastards... They knocked on my the door when i was staying at my parents for the weekend... "You got any metal around here?", they didn't once look me in the eye, they just looked around the farm. Told them to do one. 2 Nights later parents came home and found that their lock up had be broken into, and all my old mans tools including chainsaw, cutter and the rest of it gone, they also took 2 genie's which funnily enough we bought off the pickeys.

Don't trust any of them!!

Pikeys, then Folded arms

My family are in the scrap business, however we have a registered and legit scrap yard/depollution garage. In the past they've had people claiming to be the company and went around picking cars up in our name Shocked The poo hits the fan when they phone us up or more often then not, bring the car to our garage. They don't give a toss as long as they can make a few quid.

A fair bit of rubbish being spoken about scrap men in here.

I used to be one, proper scrap men or rag bone men aint robbers, its usually the pikey's that rob. Its not really fair to tar all scrap lads with the same brush, i lost count of the amount of times people were writing my reg down and the police were stopping me treating us like utter shit for earning a living. Its a bit like non bikers saying all bikers are arseholes etc.

I gave it up in the end due to all the pikey's and immigrants flooding the scene. But as i said, proper scrap lads dont usually rob as they have enough contacts and sources of scrap that are legit. I even used to pay people for stuff.

Knocking on doors is a common thing too, i got loads and loads of stuff by just knocking on and asking, got a bit of grief from bloody idiots who cant see past the end of thier own noses and have no manners too though.

Best bet is just be polite and lock your stuff up, but dont assume its cos they are scrap men, the stuff gets taken by thieves.

My washing machine broke down couple of days back and I put it in the back garden when I fitted the new one.
Within a few hours I had had a note through the door with someone asking if I was scrapping it.
I bit their hand off, saved me having to get rid.

You see, that doesn't bother me if they've posted a note and asked if they can take goods from your property in a polite manner.

However, a few months back, my sister had just renewed most of her kitchen appliances and left an oven out in the back yard under a tarpaulin because her mate from work had said that she would have it off her. (You can probably guess what's coming next... )

Less than 24 hours later, my sister went out to clean the back yard up and noticed that the "bulge" underneath the tarp looked a lot smaller than it did when the oven was under. She checked it and surprise surprise..... It was gone.

Not too surprising as it happens all the time but the pikeys that nicked it had to scale a 15 ft breeze block wall and look under the tarp to get to it and then lift the oven back over the wall to get back out. They didn't manage to open the gate because the padlock was left untouched. Just goes to show the extent these people will go to...
