One of the best races I have ever seen was a short circuit race at the Kirkiston circuit in Co.Down in 1989 (Sunflower Trophy). Gary Cowan was riding a sandard Yamaha tz 250 race machine and was up against a factory Norton (S.Cull) a grand prix 500cc Honda, several RC30 750cc Hondas and Ron Haslam on a full blown factory RG 500 Grand Prix Suzuki, Carl Fogerty was also racing a big machine in the race. Gary rode circles round them all but was beaten in the last lap by Haslam on the G.P bike and a very fast RC 30. Gary Cowan sadly had to stop racing shortly afterwars due to serious injuries and I often wonder what could have been had he been able to continue, i.m.o he was the biggest rising star of his time without exception.
