Did you know you needed to send off your licence every ten years with an up to date photograph and pay £20 to get it renewed?

I just found out you do.

Last time I sent my licence in 2 1/2 years ago to get 3 points added it came back without the nice wallet that holds both paper and card in neatly. Well annoying.

Yes they send you an 'update pack' a couple of months before it needs renewing.

They always say that they'll never return the plastic wallets if sent in, so keep 'em. The DVLA's own literature says that!

mines due next year, still £20 is a lot cheaper than a passport renewal which is essentially the same process

I just had to do this.

The picture is crappier too. My old one was colour. The new one is monochrome.

I have read through the form I was sent a few times and did not see anywhere not to return the plastic wallet.
There was no other literature in the envelope.

I had put it in a crappy plastic wallet but after reading what you said I will take it out and send the licences, form and cheque loose.

stinkwheel, the form gives lots of guidelines regarding the criteria of the photograph to be sent in, one of those is that it must be colour and not B&W.

Yes and I sent them a colour picture. However, the picture on my new licence photocard (which arrived about 4 weeks ago) is in monochrome.

My old licence that I got 10 yeas ago was in colour.

This is BOLLOCKS !!!

When I got my licence, I was still at school and looked rather sexy if I do say so myself.

I didn't have specs then and wasn't as fat as I am now. Sad I want to keep the same picture !

The trick is to change the picture when you're already being charged for something else, free picture change..
IE I sent my license back early this year to have my expired <25kw restriction removed..
Cunningly the wankers charge £20 for that as well,
So I thought I might aswell get my picture updated seeing as I'm only going to pay £20.

Changing your address is free. If you change your address after your restriction has run out, the computer prints your current entitlements on the new one.

I have seen nothing saying you can't change your address twice (say from your own house to your parents house then back again) in a short period of time. Wink

I can vouch for this...I am a serial address changer...I forgot 'not to send the plastic wallet' this time though...donk! But I did forget to send the wallet card. It's a handy one to have in the bike jacket as identification. Cool

The new pictures are black and White, because it apparently makes it harder to forge them. God knows how though. It's easier for me, as I've run out of colour ink in my printer!

Don't forget to photocopy both the paper and card, and preferably before-hand request from the DVLA what details they hold about you and your entitlements (£5) this way if they miss entitlements off you can prove they held the information prior to renewal.
