And I never knew of this security method before today. Neutral Shows what I know. Laughing

Last week I emptied out the Pan's fuel tank and heard a rattling as I shook the thing. After a while (thanks to the design of the petrol tank - with it's collar around the inside of the opening Grr!) I managed to hook the small black disc out. Attached is a pic although it's slightly smaller than it appears, probably the same diameter as a 5p piece. The thing looks like a chequers playing piece and has 'trovan 300 AEG' on one side.

Then, when crawling around under the bike I found another, wedged inside a frame cross-piece. Thinking

Not until this evening did I google the writing and find this thread on a Triumph forum here where others say it's a Datatag transponder.

Am I the only one to not have known of this security method?

Mr. Green

Check your bike docs incase you have the data-tag documents with them. then you can re register it to yourself.

they are usually hooked into the tank with a special tool and stuck to the surface at the top, dont know why it was loose... there would be one on the frame (as you found) and also there may be one inside one or both of the wheels

How would RFID work in a metal tank? As surely the metal would sheild it much like a faraday cage? Confused

When I fitted the Datatag to my NS125, I had one epoxied in the frame, one injected in a capsule into the seat, and one epoxied inside the tank.

You can't detect them unless you're right next to them, so it isn't a method of big brother tracking.

Yea, from reading up it seems the readers have to be held close to the vehicle to get the ID numbers etc. I'm guessing plod hardly bother though - do they scan every stolen bike they find? How often is the register updated?

I've just never seen them before, and nothing came with the bike to indicate their presence. First I'd heard is when the loose one rattled around inside the tank. Mr. Green

i had an alphadot transponder tagging thingy on my first cbr.

damn good idea Smile

you also get some glue thats filled with microdots so small you can barely see them and if magnified will show your alphadot number.

its a nice idea.

the blade has smartwater tagging already, otherwise id get another kit

Correct, int t'olden days, but the petrol eats the epoxy and they become loose. And by special tool do you mean a wire coat hanger and bluetac? cos thats what it says in my instructions for my SRAD's datatag haha. Thumbs Up Laughing

lol yeah when i say special tool it will be a glorified coat hanger and some blue tac haha. So are they just loose in the tank now then or fixed in some other way? Got one in me VRF tank but i cant hear any rattling so i can only assume its still stuck fast...

Our Cat has one in her neck.

Did you know you can get Catflaps that open when they register the correct Microchip in your pet's neck.

Why do humans not get them fitted for bikes and cars???? Laughing

My CG has several very unique (read smashed up or bodged) parts on it which will always let me identify it as mine! After a long time with a bike you know when it's yours Thumbs Up

Provided it's in direct contact with the metal it will actually help. Otherwise you would take the cap off and stick the sensor inside. Read range is about 3m.

Negatory, it is designed to stop your bike being stolen and stripped for parts.
