So, it seems the canadian bloke intending to come to my school bailed on account of having a vagina. So they are one teacher down (infact they're a lot of teachers down).

If you can start now, have a degree, and have ~1k saved/you can borrow then you can come join me.

23 hours a week 'work' (playing games with kids who'll worship you). Internet is 20p p/hour on a sliding scale (ie 30p for 2 hours), a big meal from the street cafes/cafeteria is 60p, bottles of Red Bull 20p.

Our accomodation has aircon, flushing toilets and quite decent internet included (if you bring a laptop - and don't let it get nicked Embarassed ), and the owner is an absolute pisshead who will force feed you whisky/chang Thumbs Up

Pay is 700 quid a month (32,000 Baht), accomodation is already paid, so barely have any deductions after (maybe 20-50quid) and no tax unless you come back next semester. Only 4 month contract to start with.

ONLY negative is it is absolutely bastard hot here at the moment, but they seem totally at peace with you sweating your balls off near them Laughing Plus this school is /very/ relaxed about uniform compared to others.

Just floating this out, as there are a lot of bored graduates out there, and they are /desperate/ for teachers Thumbs Up Long as your accent isn't ridiculously bad, you're ok. Although black people may struggle.

It's not /all/ rosy. For a start, you'll be stuck living and working with me Laughing

Classrooms are ghetto to say the least, and only have ceiling fans. And you can't touch the kids Shifty

Other then that, near to Laos, good for pretty much everything. I feel I got bloody lucky after hearing what a lot of friends are stuck with.

People have acquired fake degrees in the past and come to teach, and in Thailand you could get away with it. I wouldn't condone it naturally. Or you can do a TEFL course, but thats more time and money.

Also, due to the red shirts they are generally down a lot of teachers all over Thailand. Trouble is only in Bangkok, and even then if you have a brain you'll barely even see a barricade.

So, if you miss the slot at /my/ school, there are plenty of other schools going. Just I can't vouch they won't be anal about uniform, that you'll have aircon or a flushing toilet.

Bumguns rock though Thumbs UpLaughing

Have you finished your degree? Quite possibly, but they seem to want your original degree certificate. But I'm sure you can get a letter from your uni.

I forgot to mention, you have to get a CRB check and visa. CRB check takes about a week, but my visa came back the next day. Industrious little buggers.

Aye, Korea and China pay more. Korea is a bugger to sort the visa (or rather, apostille on CRB. But I have my manuscripts to maybe go there after this) and China is well, China.

A glimpse of the level of English half my kids are at;

I don't graduate until next year but really really want to do something like this. What agency did you go through? (if you went with one) and how much does it cost to get out there?

If you get stuck for lesson plans, just join Daves Cafe online, they have loads and loads of ideas / lesson plans and swap tips and everything. You might even find some people nearby via the site.

I had English First contact me and offer me work in Sulawesi, but I have decided to stick it out and wait for this CC job to start.

Yes Itchy. Yes they are. They're terrible. The fact EVERY experienced teacher over here recommends them to encourage STT is obviously all a scam.

Get over yourself lad. The alternative is play games with them for an hour, literally.

As for bum guns, most toilets here have a tiny shower head on a hose attached to the side. Minty fresh after every crap Thumbs Up

GR, I'm 5 minutes away from Sakkonnakkon, which has night clubs Thumbs Up Went out for a few drinks in a quiet bar, and had a thai singer on who had so much work she looked like Janet Jackson. But the waitresses were clamouring about, and they were all cute Thumbs Up The teacher I've been drinking with, who owns the accommodation, has already had girls ask for my number off him. Nice girls too Mr. Green

In short, this is a very good area to be. Only danger is accidentally fucking one of your students of a weekend, as I'm a bit /too/ close to the clubs.

Ok, so 20 minutes to write two sheets (one for each year), 5 minutes to photocopy (100+50 copies - 1 pound)... All 4 lessons today were a piece of piss, the students were interested and fully took part (writing and speaking), and I got applause at the end of one.

So yes Itchy, fuck my face.

Granted my post was not particularly constructive in its criticism, however you have to consider how much depth there is to your teaching. You can take it or leave it and go all ad hominem if you want.

Fill in the blanks are considered weak because they are easy and they do not encourage depth of thinking, have you ever seen the film Fahrenheit 451? The one based on Ray Bradbury's novel not the Michael Moore film.

The minimalist thinking of the interactive television is a parody of this as simply all they think about is the _____ .

While if you have 4-7 sentences asking identify the verb and the meaning of the sentence and context.

Say:

AShe speaks Thai

BShe is speaking Thai

Etc

On the face of a non native English person these look the same. But with these sentences you can ask several questions, what is the context is it past, present or future?

Also what form does it take? Simple/perfect/continuous.

More encouragement of thinking = better you can ask them to discuss with each other what they think.

You then watch for quiet ones which is a sign they do not know or understand what you are on about. Then you concept check with a follow up exercise to ensure they really do know what you are on about.

It is about improving your teaching Bonny take it or leave it, but as I said anybody can make a fill in the blanks exercise. And tbh Korea (less so China) students will politely nod in class, then will go and complain to their parents.

Youre not advising badly here itchy, but I feel youre already forgetting that Bonny said they already have a proper teacher for all that - Bonny is more for pronounciation and helping with exercises. He has to take into account he doesnt counter what the other teacher is doing also, which will probably be more indepth language - or I'm talking out of my arse. Which is normal.
