I've just bought a TomTom Rider (Second Edition) but the charger it comes with is designed to plug into a car's cigarette lighter. I've had a search on Google but can't find any details of a TomTom bike charger - which is odd, seeing as it's a bike SatNav. I also can't find an adaptor that would change that connection to something working on a bike. It seems the only option is to install a cigarette charger onto the bike and plug it into there. Any thoughts learned folk?

Install a cigarette lighter, you can buy the parts from maplin for about £4 or you can get a premade complete set from HG for £8.

If you make your own just remember to put an inline fuse to prevent fires and such like, they you just hook it to the battery terminals, and thats it you're done.

The rider should have a mount that comes with a twin cable which wires into the bike, ideally the ignition, if you have to open the flap at the bottom to plug it in then you have bits missing and that cable won't plug in if you have the rider on the proper mount.

It charges when you drop the rider into the mount, no messing with plugging stuff in etc.

New cradles cost about £60, plus the ram mount which costs about that again and these parts wear over time and although i do huge mileages i'm on my second mount in a year, lucky it's got a 2 year warrenty.

Did you get the scala headset with it as well?

The mount

The unit fitted and you can see the wiring plugged into the bottom of the mount.

Thanks Bramble, so I need a cradle and a ram mount?

Then it's just putting the Rider into the cradle, wiring the cradle to the bike, putting the cradle into the mount and attaching the mount to the frame.

All I got was the Rider itself, the cigarette lighter power cable and the headset.

Just recently put a 3 way cigarette lighter onto an 800 Intruder - piece of cake, just make sure you put an inline fuse as close to the battery as you can!

The Tomtom mount comes with a variety of fixing methods.

Mine is secured to the handlebars using longer bolts which go through the tomtom mount and the brake cylinder clamp.

There is a spring loaded ball and socket arrangement which is used to adjust the angle of the Rider. This can be slackened off and the whole mount can easily be removed from the bike.

You can also get a car windscreen mount for the Rider.

Of course. If you want to go for the belt and braces approach, You could use a relay too so it switches off with the ignition.
