I have never used a rivet gun before but had to drill out 6 old rivets on my exhaust to get this ugly piece of brushed alumium off the chrome silencer.

Got them out fine and the brushed aluminium off now I want to put new rivets in to close the holes off.

The hole is 4.5mm wide. What size rivet should I used to close the hole?

I have 2.4 3.2 4.0 and 4.8mm rivets.

Also is it ok to clean chrome with Autosol? Don't want to scrath it.

So long as the chrome isnt a perfect mirror finish then yes it is very good.

Autosol does a good job but it isnt fine enough to give you a super shiny finish that you get on brand new chrome plating, if the chrome or st/st is not brand new though then it is good stuff to use.

It is fairly new and the finish is pretty good.

What would an alternative be to get a super shiny finish?

Try just cleaning it with a bit of WD40 on a rag.

you probably drilled the 4mm hole out to 4.5mm. well done.
may as well drill it out to 4.8 otherwise using 1/2mm smaller rivets will be a lot weaker.

Thanks Robby, Jim. WD40 seems to have a 100 different uses.

up in 3rd, guess again, I drilled the rivet heads while the brushed aluminuim was still in place and the heads came off, took the aluminuim off and the rivets were still in the holes so I pulled them out. The original holes were 4.5mm.

Just been out and tried a 4mm rivet, it was very tight.
Do you think it's worth drilling the holes out?

Stick one in and pop it. If it's secure you're good to go. If not, it'll come off anyway so you can try something else.
