In light of all the threads involving potentially warped discs, can anyone recommend me a decent yet cheap dial indicator to check run out?

Thanks in advance Thumbs Up .

generally you will know if the disk is warped by the intermittent gripping of the brake pads as you push the bike, if you feel the brakes grip then release then grip etc etc. the disk is warped

Cheers all Thumbs Up .

Will try the pikey versions first, tried it previously with a length of pipe and some axle stands but couldn't see anything wrong.

A sheet of glass is ideal.

If it doesn't pulse through the lever when braking then personally I wouldn't worry about it.

Is this regarding the fluctuating brake effort that was found when you had your MOT? I had the same thing on my bike, and I know of others who have had the same, all on CBR600F4's.

Rubbing the discs with some wet and dry, and some brake cleaner makes it go away, although it comes back after a short while. I've changed pads and discs, and they did exactly the same after a short while.

I get no pulsing through the lever either. So I'm thinking it isn't warped discs. Neutral Question

It's hard to find warp in a fully floating disk using a dial gauge because they are free to move laterally on the buttons. It would be possible I guess, by watching the swing of the needle as the wheel rotates and if it makes a sudden jump then the disc is warped not just running-out on the buttons, it would take a bit of a trained eye to decipher the readings though.

Dial gauges are cheap on eBay. Get a plunger-type rather than the lever type - it'll be better suited to the purpose (aswell as being cheaper). You can get them for less than a fiver. I have a handful of them.

What other types of discs are there in addition to "fully-floating"? And how o you tell what type they are? Are my discs fully-floating?

And how much movement should there be side to side, and should it be easy to move them? As far as I can tell, mine don't have any movement in them at all.

Non-floating disks are bolted directly to the wheel. Floating ones are fitted to a carrier with buttons , and the carrier bolts to the wheel.

Hey how cool is that - the ebay auction thing at the bottom is displaying auctions for dial indicators. Must grab it from the topic.

I sense an opportunity for seriously comedic abuse here Very Happy
