Could anyone clarify something for me?

My NSR, left hand side of the lower engine, had it off to work on the starter and there wasnt any oil in there but it has a seal and its the alternator side.
I'm starting to think maybe it should have oil in there? It has channels and those hollow tubes that go in them and i'm starting to think there should be oil in there?

Does anyone know if there should be oil in this side on the engine?

Best regards

Sounds like a crank oil seal has worn out or been fitted badly and then come lose, buy a manual or get it sorted by a shop or buddy

Crank oil seal you say, hmmm...
There is a seal on that side of the engine which has fantastic flaps (dont ask me why, seem to provide no structral benifit etc) that covers the bolts to get the starter motor off.
When i got my starter out this did indeed break but as there didnt seem to be any oil in there i ran it to see what happened.

No oil has been lost so either it re-sealed but i'm pretty sure theres no oil in there atall...

Also, just another observation, my oil level check window, the oil in there looks perfectly clear Still, due to this i put a bit to much oil in and rode it a couple of times.

I started taking oil out the other day and some more today, *syringe & tubing) and the oil coming out is brownish and even though i'v got about 600ml out (origionally about 1.2l-1.3l was in at its fullest), so it must be at least getting near the right level (900ml) but the *level* isnt changing?!

When i got it i changed the oil (was black) and put 900ml in, even then the spy glass oil looked clear...

Any thoughts of they could be connected? If the oil not getting around? Asside this the bike runs fine, plenty of lovely blue 2t smoke when cold that clears up after a short while.

Any thoughts would be good, is oil circulated around past the little window? Might drain it all out and put 900ml back in just to be sure of the level.

Best regards
