2002 Honda VFR display gone blank

I was out on a ride today and I looked down to check my speed only to see that the display had gone completely and the rev counter was not registering anything. The bike still works but there is no screen. Any ideas?

PCB boards on the clocks can corrode and break contact. Check for that first.

They are notorious for it. My '97 VFR has loads of bits of wire spliced into the PCB to keep all the dash working. Next time I take it off, I'm very tempted to just bin the lot and hardwire everything in the traditional manner.

It's a bit of flexible plastic with the circuit printed on. A visual inspection will show you any corroded tracks on it. If you're lucky, you'll be able to bypass the corroded part by screwing a bit of wire with a ring terminal on each end onto it.

Damn it that sounds complicated. Just to add, the indicator light flashing as it should on the display and the digital clock still works. The rev counter doesn't work either. Is that controlled electrically too?

The whole lot is electronic and the whole lot goes through the same PCB from two great big, multi-pin plugs.

If it's anything like mine, the clock gets its power off a different track on the board to the other instruments (so it doesn't reset when you kill the ignition). It'll most likely be either the power supply or earth track that's done a bunk.
