Radiator Fan

ok so i had my 1998 fzs 600 fazer out yesterday, just to ride around the garden as i cant ride it on the rode yet (n). i was expecting the radiator fan to come on at some point because i had it out for atleast 20 mins in about 28 degrees heat. it didnt so i was slightly concerned.

in the next week or so i will get round to checking the fan to see f it works by just connecting it up to a battery, but should i be worried? or do they only really come on when your riding through traffic?

I don't think that would be hard enough work.
A typical scenario for them to need run is riding quite hard or thrashing down motorway, then come on standing or slow traffic.
Bike suddenly can't lose previously generated heat.

They are all different though.
You are right to be aware it might not be working. Overheating can do a lot of damage.

Very observant of you there but i wouldnt have thought you would push the engine enough to warrent a fan just playing in the garden.

Keep an eye out when you hit the road, do you have a them sensor?

Have a look at the temp reading - how high did it get? Find out (web / manual etc) what temp the fan should kick in

there isnt a temperature dial so i cant refer to that unfortunatly. i will watch it closely when i start riding properly. the reason i ask and am more concerned is the bike has spend the last two years with the previous owner in spain, and so the fan will probally have had a lot of use, and if it wasnt working correctly could potentially cause some damage. it may be that it wasnt enough work for it to get hot enough, but i was under the impression that if you just leave the bike idling for ages then the fan was more likely to come on as there wasnt an air flow over the engine to cool it, and thats what the fans were for?

Sorry, not familiar with that bike so I didn't know there was no temp dial. You can check the thermostat by removing it from the bike and dangling it (on a string) in a pan of water on your oven. Heat the water, measuring with a thermometer. It should open at a *certain* temp - you would need to find that part out. Check wiring / fan fuse. Disconnect fan wiring and connect to the battery to see if the fan motor is ok.
Without a temp gauge, you might be able to attach the thermometer to the bike, warm it up to the temp you saw on the oven test and see if the fan comes on.

CHECKING THE THERMOSTAT
1. Check:

thermostat 1
Does not open at 80.5 c 83.5C
Replace.
a. Suspend the thermostat in a container
filled with water.
b. Slowly heat the water.
c. Place a thermometer in the water.
d. While stirring the water, observe the thermometer’s
indicated temperature.

there is a light that comes on if the bike overheats, which didnt as far as im aware yesterday so thats a good sign. i think it must be okay in that case actually. i will check the fan as soon as i get chance.

i have that manual, but it doesnt detail anything about the fan? it just says check but doesnt give a procedure to test it unless im reading it wrong?

Admittedly, that manual does not seem very comprehensive, despite its size. I have found another manual that may help but I cannot download it to check at the moment.
