I had a little play over the weekend crossing a ford.
Made it through fine, got wet but it was a welcome relief from the high temperature.

Is there a right way to cross water?
Just gas it or go slowly?

Heres the youtube footage -

I'm on the F650, not the CD200 Laughing
I'm guessing next time stand up on the pegs?
Thanks Thumbs Up

In my experience there are two schools of thought around this, the careful picking your way through technique.

And the gun it technique.

Because I can't get my feet down on any trail bike I use the gun it technique and try to have momentum carry me over tricky bits especially when you get potatoes at the bottom of the river.

I did get stuck a couple of times got off the bike then gunned the gas then jumped back when I hit potatoes or dug into the bottom of a river bed. Of course I was riding a heavy bike with lots o luggage.

Mongolians would laugh at me.

Also it depends on the depth, width and river bed.

Short and shallow, just gun it standing up, remember that water can rapidly sap your speed so get ready to gun it.

Deep and rocky bottom - steady and momentum is your friend. Don't be afraid to sit down with your legs flapping wildly, it's better than dropping and drowning the bike.

As my gun hoe technique has been posted heres the careful method with addtional local childern keeping me up right, was bloody awful as the river bed was full of large slipy stones.

really depends on what the river is like for deep/fast flowing its best to pick your way across when it is really bad and you have no choice 2-3 men can push/float one across.

Just don't assume that because there is a path in and a path out that you will be able to get through.

The safe way is to wade through first to check for a solid bottom and any potholes/big stones.

This was advice I got off my mate who rode his KLR around bumfuck nowhere in Queensland Australia for six months.

Failure to do so can leave you in a predicament, as he found.

Here's a site that lists water crossings by County.

https://www.wetroads.co.uk/index.htm

I'll wait for the next heatwave then give some a go.

I love that tatters video, there is a perfectly good road next to him Laughing

I crossed a ford on my TDM is was only about 4" deep, I was just abit supprised to see a river across a fairly normal b road with ducks swimming across, I've never seen one before and just thought fuck it why not, it was a brilliant novelty and the ducks really added to it!
