Found out I actually bought an NTV rather than a Bros. Shaft drive and all.
Engine has 38k miles on it and seems to run very strong, but how long do they tend to last? Have heard they go forever and wasnt too worried about 38k.
Any signs the engine is going out on this bike? No blue smoke at the moment
Cheers. ____________________ Current: MT-10, Bandit, Grom, GPZ500

I've had two of them well a 600 and the 650 (the 600 was run over by a lorry)
But they will last forever and a day, I crammed 167000 miles on mine and it came with about 50k to start with.
At the end of my reign of terror, both cylinderheads were weeping oil, the valves hadn't been done for over 150000 miles, it ran on open carb due to the carb rubbers being holed. And the zorst was blowing in 3 places. It would still run.
There are weaknesses:
The collector box gets holed easily and rots you can replace them with VW mini chrome exhausts.
Don't rev over 3500rpm in 1st or 2nd.
A 93 NTV? Its not mine is it? L96 as the first 3 numbers of the plate? ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will. In the end, your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching. |

K75 im afraid. Would be funny if I did have it though.
Oh, ever had any problems with the temp gauge not working? Mine doesnt ever seem to rise .
Didnt really notice until I had been on an hour motorway journey and the engine seemed pretty hot. Would of been nice to see the gauge. ____________________ Current: MT-10, Bandit, Grom, GPZ500

There was a problem in the early days of the NTV.
Remember that the engine was originally designed to run with chain final drive, as in the Bros, Transalp etc. but for the NTV they bunged on shaft drive which put extra strain on the gearbox that it wasn't designed to take, and there were cases of gearbox problems.
Some were lucky, but many, like me were not.
Luckily since the early days of that bike, the gearbox was beefed up to cope with the shaft drive which means that if you have a later model, you should be OK.
The engine is bullet proof and is still in use in several Honda's today, including the one I mentioned, the Transalp.
I once met a courier with an NTV600 (same engine), who was coming up to his second time around the clock, and he was still on the opriginal cam chain |
