Expectant cost for an engine strip / rebuild

Hi All

I had a big issue with my Hyosung GT650R
I thought it was the clutch but after stripping it out myself, I discovered it wasn't the clutch but the final drive shaft felt rough as if the bearings had gone.

Anyway, not having the time or space to look at it any further myself I stuck it in a van and took it to a trusted workshop.


Today they confirmed that both the wheel hub bearing and the final drive bearings are shot.


So, they have said that they'll need to drop the engine and break open the engine to replace the damaged bearings.


However, they won't give me a exact price for the work to be carried out.
Of course I understand that the time it takes to strip an engine varies from one to another but he has said £700
"...but don't quote me on that"


Unfortunately I suspect all this has been caused by me riding round for a week with a very tight spot in my knackered chain, so I have to pay the price.


However, what do people think this kind of engine work should cost?
I assume it will be a case of splitting the crank cases, driving in new bearings and putting it all back together again?
As this is the case, I think I'll get them to replace all internal bearings with decent kyoto ones just as a "why not" seeing as it is an opportunity to do so.


so, price people think I will be looking at?

Why not just buy another engine?
if its like normal japanese bikes lumps go under 400 quid, then just fitting, 700 estimate bet that goes up after the works been done lol

How old is the 650R? pre injection?

You might want to ask on Korider if one of the guys is near you.

Newbymick is some form of legend, helped my with my 125 no end, even picked me up from bromley to go pick my bike up in biggin hill

He might be able to do that sort of work, if not, drop moto-union an email, ask for Mark or Doug, tell em Paddy sent you... get a quote from those guys, excellent workmanship!

The bike is (was) Newbymick's
its a 2007

He recommended the workshop it's at at the moment (T Northeast)

I have spoken to Motounion in the past but their attitude in previous experience put me off going to them, even though they are considerably closer to me
I may give them a call tomorrow just to see what kind of price they give me.


They have offered a replacement engine for £700 but they don't know the condition of the bike it came from, millage or the year!!!
Pathetic to be honest, I have asked for the engine number so at least I can determine the year, and Newbymick has said he'll go and check out the engine tomorrow to give his opinion on it.


I would buy another engine and fit it myself but they aren't particularly common and I can't find any for sale at the moment.

thats ace news to know its gone to a decent rider been on the back of that one...awesome thing, bought the 650 injection but took back.. bad issue with FI.

Whats the beef with Moto? dw i dont work for them, just good to get the other side of the coin you know?

also looked into the sv650 engine? the like 02/03? well pre injection..

I have been thinking about the sv650, but firstly, no ones ever done it and I cant find any exact dimensions of both of the engines and their mounting points so I don't want to buy an engine and find it doesn't fit.

Also not sure about the electrics on the sv etc.


Nothing particular about Motounion, I have spoken to them a few times, asking for basic advice, checking what they would offer me for my GT250, and parts availability amongst a couple other things.
They always seem very defensive and in my experience a bit short as if they just don't have the time even if they would benefit them financially.

I cant comment on their workmanship, I have never heard anything else bad about them.In fact particularly on mechanical knowledge apparently Doug their mechanic is fantastic.

I'll call them tomorrow and see what they could quote, but I suspect they'll fob me off without seeing the bike for themselves.
But we'll see!


Anyone comment on a cost for this work?

well good luck on getting it running mate, great to see these bikes about!
Donny, the bikes are nowhere near the same, The SV as stated has a few mounting differences, but its worth the fabrication for a jap engine to be put in.

Doug directly, seemed a decent guy, and Mark was also a decent guy, offered to help rebuild my 125 that blew a cylinder.. obviously for a small cost!

spoke to Motounion today, spoke to mark and then Doug and then mark again.

Both were very helpful completely different to when I last spoke to them.
So I withdraw my previous comments


And spoke to T Northeast again, have concluded that we are going to stick with my engine.
They are going to drop it, strip it then tell me exactly what needs doing and give me the price.
The replacement engine they had was stock they bought from the previous Hyosung importer.
The engine is a swap from a Warranty claim so is certain to have something wrong with it. But they would have fully refurbished it and guaranteed it for 3 Months.

Anyway, they'll do their thing over the next couple weeks and let me know w=once they delve a bit deeper

In the mean time I'll stick with my Hyo GT250 which as always is still going strong
