I changed my oil over the weekend. It was black, and not looking too brilliant.. but put Castrol 4T oil from Halford's in which came to 32.99, and now my bike's running much nicer, it's even increased MPG by about 50 miles. Is this normal???

No, unless the oil was majorly majorly fucked.

Do you mean overall range on a full tank?

Hi

50 increase in tank range is a hell of a lot. Assuming a ~3 gallon useable tank that is ~15mpg increase, probably about a 1/3 increase. Wouldn't expect anything like that difference from an oil change (near a 10th of that if you used a lighter oil, at the expense of oil pressure and engine life).

All the best

Keith

New oil will keep the engine cooler and thus more efficient, but a whole 50mpg more? I'm not so sure.

I try to keep an eye on my bike's oil and fuel consumption and do notice a slight increase in mpg in the first week after I change the oil (monthly) but it's usually <= 1mpg and could be just as much down to ambient temperature changes as it could new oil.

I'm just going off how many trips to work and back I get on a full tank. Work is 25miles away and I usually get 3 days to a tank before the light starts to flash. But I changed the oil on the weekend and I've managed 4 days before the light making me think it's increased my overall mileage.

Maybe I just rode a bit more calmly? But it's a large increase.

Ive always noticed the engine perform better after an oil change, mainly bottom end, but not much difference in MPG.
