You have £1000, new to biking, what sportsbike?

Say that you have £1000, you're new to biking, you've just passed your test, did direct access so can ride any bike now unrestricted, and you want a sportsbike that is going to teach you the basics of riding and brush up your skills without being dangerous for a first time biker. What are the options you'd consider?

They're rare, but if you can find yourself a good condition Suzuki RGV 250, they are bloody AMAZING bikes.

Whatever you get it'll be old, CBR600 a good choice but I would have to say that of course, just be careful and be prepared to spend some money to make sure it's right. Don't buy anything unless you're sure you can afford to run it right for that reason I'd stick with the CBR, loads sold so second hand parts ought not to be a problem, I have a feeling you'd find new parts pricey, good luck!

You need to gather information on a few bikes and then check out how much the insurance could be.

The cost of insurance could make all the difference to what you can afford to buy.

I wouldn't get a full-on sports bike.

I'd get either a GPZ500s or a CB500.

Several reasons. One is that they'll go fast enough for the time being. Both will do a little over 120mph which is fast enough for any circumstances really.

You are also clearly on a budget. These will be cheaper to run, maintain and insure.

For £1000 you'll get a reasonably tidy one with moderate mileage on it. You'd get a higher mileage, fairly tatty sportsbike for the same amount. What you tend to find is that this will reflect the state of repair of the bike. You might find that £1000 CBR with 50k miles on the clock actually needs three new discs, a chain and sprockets and a set of tyres which suddenly turns it into a £1700 bike.

I might suggest a GSXF600 as being a bike that goes for around that budget in fairly good condition too. That would be if I didn't hate suzukis. They also aren't pretty.

If I were new to biking then I would be looking for something I didn't mind dropping, having a few minor spills on...something that was forgiving and possibly a bit tatty, but sturdy and reliable. Not a sportsbike.

I was in the situation when I did my Das. I wanted a half decent 600cc fully faired sports bike, but with cheap insurance and I only had £700 to spend.

I looked at CBR's, for £700 it was all shit and very high miles, all around the early ninties age.

gsxr's and zx's were all to expensive

Thundercats seem to still be making half decent money and fzr's seemed to dated and expensive to insure.

I also looked at zzr's, gsxf's and fully faired SV's, none of these floated my boat and they are all good "first big bikes" so prices are high unless you get a shitter.

There are a few decent 500cc bikes around for decent money too, but they all seemed bland and boring. I only wanted a bike for some weekend fun not for going to work on or doing high miles.


So after looked at the above you're more than likley thinking I've pretty much ruled out most fully faired il4 600's.

But then I found a little gem

A Suzuki RF600r.
It was a 95 plate with 30K on the clock, in fairly decent nick all for £630 with a new MOT and a few months tax. Insurance was nice and cheap to. 23yrs old, licence held for 5 minutes, no NCD and 3 points, £170 TPO.


The RF was a very nice bike with an easy riding postion and good weather protection. Be a sports tourer rather than a full blow sports bike it was very forgiving in the corners. The engines a built proof and the brakes were very good compared to the wifes SV I had been riding for a month before and the little glove box thing is well handy for keeping your fags, phone and wallet in.



Sorry about the long post, just thought I'd explain my budget bike choice. When I was looking for my current bike I saw a few RF's for under a grand on bike trader.

How much power does an old GSXR600 have? Not too much for a beginner? Is a new rider (I'm 23) not gonna get hammered on the insurance on a 600cc sportsbike?

mine was a 1997, the said cunts bike is also a 1997.

insurance for me was £500 TPFT at 18 with 1 years NCB

240 the following year.
then i thought fuckit and bought an R6. a real bike.

170 was with churchill with my wife with on the policy, you also get riding other bikes. Just had my renewal through, its now 168.10 with 1yr ncd on my 99 gsxr600, strange thing is it would of been cheaper on a gsxr750

Hi i'm new to bikes too haven't completed licence yet, I'm 36 so insurance quotes on a few bikes don't seem too bad.
Not sure what bike to start looking for is the general opinion a CBR ?

^^^ As I say to most people, look around this forum, there are tonnes of 'what bike next threads', write down the list of bikes you have seen listed, go onto google images, look at all the bikes. Cross off your list the ones you don't like.

Then go out to a few bike shops and look at the ones you do like, and if possible go for a test ride, (if able) if not, at least sit on the bike and get a feel for it - distance from seat to footpeg, how long the reach to handle bar is, that sort of thing...

Then make an informed decision based on what suits YOU.
