No. Not under any circumstances. All road users should be insured (yes even cyclists - don't get me started).

I don't think it's a very good idea, but if someone wants to take the risk of driving/riding without insurance then that's up to them.

I don’t care if other road users are insured or not.
I care if I am compensated if they cause an accident in which I have lost out.

I would much rather be in an accident with an uninsured driver who pays up with cash within a week to being in an accident with an insured driver who then tries to blame me in an attempt to save their no claims bonus, leading me through months or years or legal hassle.

I do try to ensure I’m fully road legal these days to save hassle and I’ve got a bit more riding it than I might have once.

A bit of paper does not solve all ills - I find it sad so many people seem to base their morality on the action of someone owning a piece of paper or not, rather than the rest of their actions.

Just read the thread. Nice bike. Frankly a lot of chatter about fuckall really, couldn't give a flying one either way.

The thing that struck me most about the thread was "Wow, you must be great at parties."

Oh and as far as ‘costing everyone else arguments‘– well they’re just silly and shows a rather obvious lack of thought.
Uninsured drivers DO NOT cost anyone anything. People that have accidents put prices up, regardless of whether they have insurance or not.

Take two examples –
A newly passed DAS rider slides their insured bike, the first vehicle they have ever insured, into a Ferrari (458 Italia, in this case, pwetty!) £500 insurance leads to a £50k insurance bill.
Someone that has been on the road for thirty years owning many vehicles borrows a friend’s car to drive to the shops, not realising their current policy does not cover them for driving other vehicles. Over the last thirty years they have spent over £50k on vehicle insurance with no claims. They clip a pedestrian who steps out into the road infront of them – the MIB awards the pedestrian £250 for a day off work with minor bruising.

So, who is costing everyone else more?

Other thread.

"If I get caught I will beg my way out of it, explain it's insured as of tomorow etc." lolz, with such a brilliant defense he'd be sure to appear on road wars if the cop car had a camera. Razz

I don't think it's a clever thing for him to ride the bike home the day before his insurance starts, but if he wants to do that then that's up to him. I'm sure lots of people on here have ridden home after buying a bike without getting insurance first.

He's shown that riding without insurance doesn't automatically result in the deaths of innocent kittens. Smile

People complain that uninsured drivers cause an increase in the price of your insurance, but that's not strictly true. People claiming for anything and everything cause an increase in the price of your insurance. People claiming for phantom whiplash to get a couple of grand cause an increase in the price of your insurance. Solicitors who encourage people to claim for questionable whiplash injuries and suchlike cause an increase in the price of your insurance. Uninsured drivers may well try to settle it privately if they're involved in a crash to avoid police involvement, those people don't increase your premium at all.

According to the British Meat council, vegetarians cost the average UK person £45 per year in increased costs.
Lets shoot them all, eh?

Can you please explain to me how an uninsured driver that is not in an accident costs anyone else anything?

Oh and please see the post previous to yours and THINK about your answer Smile.

I think that those are the causes of increased insurance prices and that people can draw their own conclusions from that. I think it's more wrong than driving without insurance.

Yes ?

Uninsured drivers don't automatically cost you anything on your premiums. L-Jam riding uninsured didn't cost you £30, I know plenty of people who've driven uninsured without causing any cost to anyone. I also know plenty of people who've driven insured but have cost you something because they either claimed or were claimed against.

People crashing and the subsequent claims cause increased insurance prices. People driving uninsured doesn't necessarily cost you anything.

I assume you're whiter than white and so have never broken any laws of the road? I also assume that you've never done any of the many things which could cause your insurance policy to not be valid?

Further things that I suspect massively put insurance costs up:
Insurance companies using specialist firms that charge four times a good rate for the work.
Extended hire vehicle usage that can come to more than the cost of a new vehicle.
Storage yards charged at the standard excessive rates.
Police using their own contractors when the person involved has a recovery policy that covers it.

There are many people ripping off US who pay for insurance – those driving without insurance aren’t too far up the list from what I can see.

I had a quick look at the other thread - could you clarify the answer of 'how do you choose which laws to break' - I must have missed it Smile.

Id imagine all of us have ridden or driven without insurance or without correct cover at some point. Im not going to say dont do it when ive done the same kind of thing myself.
However, I think theres a big difference between say

person a) pays insurance/tax every year - borrows a car to run an errand which they may not be covered to drive. Or rides home a new bike (straight home, not hooning about showing there mates etc etc).

and

person b) buys random shitbox cars/bikes on the cheap. Doesnt insure them, which probably means they have no tax, which probably means they dont bother with an MOT either. Chances are probably doesnt have a valid licence.
Still proceeds to use the vehicle day in day out as any legal driver would. Waits for vehicle to fall apart then buys replacement heap.

Person b) is a fu8king scum sucking fu*kwit and should be ran over with there own vehicle, then reversed over to make sure.

Uninsured drivers do cause a hike in premiums as those of us who do pay insurance will be partially paying a contribution to MIB to cover the genuine drivers payout when involved in an accident with a thief/uninsured driver. So quite frankly saying an unisured driver costs us nothing is a load of shat!

If you are going to ride uninsured, don't crash into me is all I care.

Even if you did, I imagine you would rather settle in cash than being reported and done for no insurance etc. 6 points and large fine.

I suggest we stop feeding the troll, and this idiot seems to be one of the biggest ones on bike forums. Have a wee search for his username elsewhere. I'm surprised it's taken him so long to find here considering his past internet forum history.

I'm not going to get drawn into a long and, frankly, pointless debate on this issue but to put right some wrongs with your current reasoning:

Firstly - the "bit of paper" isn't just a bit of paper, it's a bond - a bond that's worth, if things go really sour, into the tens of millions of pounds. This isn't "oh you've grazed my bumper" time, this is "you've proper quadraspazzed a bunch of schoolkids by throwing your bike into them at 60 mph" time. This sort of shit, although unlikely, CAN and DOES happen and is the reason why insurance is actually a pretty good idea - and shouldn't be seen as something you get value for money from ie £1 in premium = right to claim a quid back, it's something that's there in case this sort of shit happens and leaves you significantly exposed to mounting compensation and damages claims.

It's also a good idea, is it not, that if you should inflict upon a person with your actions that level of damage, that you should have adequate provision to ensure that person is taken care of? Not being funny - but I can pretty much assume you're not earning enough to pay even the future loss of income of a person you may spasticate, let anone the 24 hour intensive care they may require over a lifetime - why is it that you should be the one that decides whether or not that's an acceptable risk? Surely the affected party should have more a say than you should as to whether they wish for themselves to be exposed to that sort of risk?

Quote:

See your sentiment but you're actually wrong. If you think about it properly - you'll see why you are. It's got to do with the exposure which is presented and the premium which is recovered for such exposure.

Been reading up and uninsured drivers don't add £30 to the price of every insurance policy. Claims from accidents caused by uninsured drivers are paid for by everyone else, but it isn't just uninsured drivers who're paid for from that £30.

For every motor insurance policy that's bought, £30 goes to the MIB to cover their costs. The MIB provide cover in the event of an accident caused by an uninsured driver or an untraceable driver. So untraceable drivers are just as much to blame for that £30 MIB contribution, some of those untraceable drivers will be insured but don't stop at the scene in order to protect their NCB.

Plus, untraceable drivers will cost the 'victim' more.

If you're hit by someone that's insured then you can claim in full and no deductions are made for legal expenses, those can be claimed by your solicitor directly.
If you're hit by someone that's uninsured then you can claim in full and no deductions are made for legal expenses, those can be claimed by your solicitor directly.
If you're hit by someone that's insured but doesn't stop at the scene then you can claim in full and deductions are made for legal expenses because those can't be claimed by your solicitor directly in the same way as they can for claims against uninsured drivers.

It isn't nearly as straight forward as the overly simplistic idea that uninsured drivers add £30 to the cost of your insurance.

On your first point - the injured parties will be compensated by the MIB who will try and recover the costs from the MIB - this is the whole basis of the 'costs being added' bit.

However, what about cyclists?
What about pedestrians that may walk in front of a biker and cause them to crash.
Are they morally in the same position as motorists that do not have insurance?

arry wrote:

See Ste's point - still, at the very worst you could say 'insured drivers that have accidents and don't pay up' add more. Uninsured drivers that do not have accidents do not cost anyone anything - the reality is that the MIB will always be needed even if everyone was insured.

The dangers of uninsured drivers, statistically:

Kickstart wrote:
Interesting to note that they claim the 2m uninsured drivers cause 160 deaths a year. With (say) 30m drivers that means one in 15 uninsured, so 15*160 would mean there should only be 2400 deaths. Rather more are killed so it seems the uninsured drivers are safer Twisted Evil .

From this thread.

So please do continue telling us about the dangers of uninsured drivers when stats from the DVLA show them to be much safer drivers than those who are insured. Razz
