Map me ..

Sod sat nav, i'm buying a tankbag/map holder, but ebay and OS don't seem to sell a poxy uk wide folding paper map, laminated would be even better .. anyone got one that still beleives in real maps, the one A i got was in geography and i want to remisnise and feel clever ...

Buy last years AA/RAC etc road map. Can be found as cheap as 99p.
Rip pages out you need.
Highlight pen on your route with scrap of paper with road numbers.
Or names of town you have to pass through.

Most of the time i'll only use a satnav for music. But nice as a quick backup (road closures etc)

On to that - you can get a laminator with sheets quite cheaply too - found mine useful for on-bike stuff occasionally.

Now that I've got a half decent GPS, I've been finding it definitely saves hassle. However will often still print out maps in a lot of situations.

bought from local bike shop a couple of years back. water proof and rip proof. Works well and fits pefectly in a tank bag, but I must admit to now using a GPS when touring.

I have one of those Tuff Maps, each page is laminated, and fits perfectly in the tank bag. I couldn't tell you how much it cost or where I got it, as I've had it years and years and years...it's my biker map!!!

I don't have sat-nav in the car either, I have a map there too.

In fact my map is covered in orange highlighter pen, showing all the roads I've been down across the UK... Helps me decide where to go next...to find a road I've not travelled before.

I've got a Michelin pocket map of the UK. It was £1.99 from a service station.

Fits in my pocket. I keep it in a sandwich bag to stop it getting wet.

It's more detailed than you'd expect for such a small map.

I've always made route notes and carried the map as a backup in case my notes don't work out so well.

I tend to write down road numbers and the names of various destinations along the way, as well as whether it's a left or right turn etc.

As for maps, i've always favoured the small ring-bound Michellin maps as the ring-binding doesn't tend to break as easily as the spine of a glued/stitched maps, and they also tend to highlight the 'scenic' (i.e. twisty) routes.

To be honest, the pockets maps are no good for me ... i have 2 now.. lol .. i like the map im going to get, where i can get lost and know where to go, the pocket maps don't have enough b roads etc listed, my bad, i thought despite being pocket maps that they were more detailed ...
