First real ride of a big boys bike ..

So, following on from the 'I GOT MY SXC NU BYKE YAYYY' thread, I went out yesterday starting at about 8, and got in at about 2 before work on my first real ride of the CBR. I must add that yes I know it isn't the worlds greatest bike, nor no where near the fastest, but to me at this moment in time it is.

Worlds away from the GS! Absolutely everything is just on another level, up until about 6-7k the power delivery is quite manageable, then after that with the throttle open you must hit the powerband or something?, because the bike just takes off! The feeling of purposely slowing down just to accelerate again is huge. Top speed I got to was about 110-120, running out of road or any more being dangerous is my excuse at the moment rest assured I will top it out some time in the summer.

The next thing is the handling; after riding a GS with dodgy fork seals, the thing feels like a moto GP bike, just PLANTED onto the road; I remember thinking, now this is what a motorbike should ride like. I Am so much more confident in the bikes ability, and know I could never use its full potential, whereas on the GS I felt like the bike was struggling to keep up, or I was going to lowside if I leant any further, etc. Are BT020's any good? Because that is what is fitted at the moment.

The third main thing, is braking. Immense stopping power! I don't need to use the lever at all really and it stops much more confidently, inspiringly than the GS. I can feel a stoppie coming soon

Obviously some of you will be reading this with teh lullz because your Gixxer 1000 does these things infinitely better (G ), but to me this bike is the epitome of riding.

Wheelies will be learnt in a few weeks, I managed a few power wheelies from first - second, not really maxxed the bike out in any sense yet though.

The only thing I'm really worried about at the moment is 1. getting caught by the plod for going silly and 2. riding in the wet, with the brakes so much sharper, power so much more & handling so different to the GS. That, and I wouldn't care if the GS got hit by a bus, but I don't even want rain drops on the CBR

passed my test yesterday and used an entire tank of fuel on my CBR600FW, 7k rpm is mental, and the rasp at 6k puts a smile on my face everytime.

Just be careful, it will catch you out!

nickD, its paint job is 200 miles old, and the bike itself is in unbelievable condition so i would say old

First proper ride on a big bike is immense.

Still remember riding my Bandit home just after selling my 125. First time id been on anything more than a 125 and it put the biggest smile on my face.

I know a Bandit isnt exactly a sophisticated lump of bike, but still a world away from my old one! Was too scared to go above 8k for a few days.

The CBR600F's have always been pretty sweet and relatively light. Just don't take the piss on it too soon otherwise you'd find you'd need to spend some £££ rectifying the damage on the paintscheme.

Before you start getting overly naive on a new machine, consider the following as essential mods

Crash bungs - R&G, woodcroft, HPS... basically anything with some credibility. It might mean that you'd have to drill through the fairings... but it means when you drop it, a stone or a piece of road furniture won't drill ITSELF through the fairing or engine covers.

Loud can - anything will suffice. CBR600's don't really take well to mods. Get a loud pipe to stop people from walking in front of you because stock honda cans are very feeble.

If you want mods...

Get the chinky levers that I mentioned on my show and tell thread - definitely worth getting because the stock honda levers aren't very adjustable... especially on the clutch. It'll give better feedback through your hands.

You mentioned indis... the world's your oyster, but I'd avoid the tacky flush mount jobbies with standard bulbs. I got my LED flush mounts from china with LED arrows at the back. Avoid faux carbon since it'll ruin the looks of your bike.

Since it's a honda, budget for the following

Regulator Rectifier - £80 from dave silver. If it's 10 years old and hasn't been done, it will probably blow! They all suffer from it

Camchain tensioner. They all rattle from cold. But if it rattles when warm, could be on its way out. If it's approaching 20-30k, best replace as a precaution.

Enjoy the bike and keep it rubber side down.

I remember mine. A 375cc yamaha powervalve. It started with a trickle about to ge the feel of the handling and finished with me sitting at the side of the road next to the bike, viewing it with an eye of extreme suspicion after a totally unintentional, 1/4 mile long power wheelie when I wound it over 8k rpm in second.

Cbrs are great bikes some of the stuff JAKE used to do on his F3 was awesome.

If you even thinking about wheelies then get some crash bungs on it pronto and get some back armor. Even a 5mph spill can cost some serious $$$ or just snap your back when the bike lands on you.
