Hey I'm Ben from Hertfordshire. I'm 18 and work for John Lewis

I've been searching for different motorbike forums for the last few days and joined a few, I think this is one of the better ones so far, so much more content and so much easier to navigate round!

My dad, his brother and their dad always rode bikes and I've recently decided, after finding out how expensive it'll be to insure a car etc, that a 125cc bike is a better choice so I really just want some help from you all? Smile

How easy is the CBT etc? I've riden bikes before so know about gears, braking, clutch etc, will this help me?

Not much help on the CBT question I'm afraid.

I'm from the days of taking a written test from a mimeograph and upon passing it, you were free to drive at the ripe old age of 14. No size / power restrictions, just ride. Had to be 16 (or was it 17?? older anyway) for a regular (car) license Shocked

With some riding history though, I'm certain it would be easier for you than some.

CBT is pretty easy. I passed first time with no motorbike experience. 2 people failed on the day I did it. One couldn't speak English, the other had little road experience and kept riding to close to everything in-front of him. There is a biggish thread on this from a week or so ago. Have a nosey, seemed most people passed first time without a problem.

The CBT is a piece of cake mate. My cbt consisted of turning up, reading a number plate from a distance. Walking around the bike being told what was what. Then he went through how you would ride a bike. Then we got on the bikes and he stood next to us as we learned clutch control.

After you have the grasp of that it's pretty much maneuvers in the carpark, emergency stop etc etc. If he is happy with you then it's onto the road with an ear piece and him telling you which way to go and correcting any problems.

Then it's back to the van where he showed us a few photos of why you should wear protective gear. He spoke about the law abit and the does and dont's of being a learner.

It is easy mate but just take your time and welcome I think I missed that bit out lol.

Ringing up tomorrow about booking my CBT, get that sorted then use my next wages to buy a bike and then month after that to get insurance (or borrow money and pay it back) all ready to start my Police Training in August Smile

If you're thinking about getting a decent 125 to learn on, i'd recommend the CG125... it takes a beating and will run forever.

The CBT is a piece of piss, i did it on my CG and was there for about 3 hours before buggering off home on it.

I'm not sure what bike I'm going to go for yet! Been talking to my parents loads about it and being typical protective parents, they're quite against the idea however with a dad who used to ride bikes he was more on my side with the "you don't know how dangerous they are till you come off"

Well that's from a dad with a silicon palm in his right hand... thanks to his bike! lol

One of the conditions is, I get something cheap and basic for a few months then go for a race style one when I've learnt the roads a bit and got used to other people on the road as well... well makes sense to me!
