Ever since i got my laptop i've had problems with Office 2000. The laptop is running Windows XP by the way.
The problem is, when I install Office, half way through I get an error message saying 'installation was ended prematurely'. After this I am able to run all the programs on Office, but when I try to install anything else I get a message saying that Office is still installing and it makes me remove Office.
Does anyone have any idea's? I've tried 2 different Office disks and it happens on both. Is it not compatable with XP? Or will I have to fork out to buy Office 2004? I don't want to as I don't see the improvement to be worth the extra cost.

As far as I know Office 2000 should work with Windows XP but you can check by downloading the Windows XP upgrade adviser (from microsoft.com)which will tell you what is not compatible with XP. I don't like XP much - I upgraded to XP on my laptop and ended up having so many problems that I went back to Windows 98 which is nice and simple like me...

This from the Houston Chronicle of all places - does it sound like your problem? (Dunno how useful the answer is, though)

Q. I've recently purchased a new desktop running Windows XP. I installed Microsoft Office 2000 Premium on it shortly after purchasing it. My problem occurs when I'm trying to respond to an e-mail that I've received. When I hit reply, the computer automatically attempts to install the Office software again. After hitting cancel two to three times, the installation stops and I can continue with my reply. If I don't hit cancel, the installation will continue until it realizes there is no CD inserted to continue with the installation.

A. When you do a standard installation of a Microsoft Office, it only installs the standard features, not every feature. Most people do not use all of the software's capabilities. By not installing the whole thing, you conserve disk space.

What is happening here is that Office is looking for a component it needs and you will have to put the CD in the drive and let it pull it off. It should only need to do this once.

With disk space being plentiful these days, you can opt to install the entire application by choosing the custom install option when you first install the program. In your case, where the software is already installed, you can change the install by going to the Add/Remove programs section of the Control Panel and click the Change option for Microsoft Office. From there, you can add all the components and never be prompted again for the CD.

If you do not own the software and installed Office from a borrowed copy of the program, say from work or from a friend, you now see one of the benefits of owning the software.

No not really anything like it, mine isn't installing everything, i've tried custom installation, full and the recommended one, it's happening all the time. However I do also have Microsoft Works, something might be conflicting between these two.

I use Office 2000 on XP Pro with no problems so I don't think it's that.

Disk space isn't a problem.

Just out of interest, do a comprehensive memory test - I had a similar problem that turned out to be a dodgy DIMM - only showed up under installation or memory max testing.

Reinstall Office using the custom option, when you get to a screen with the folders on click on the top one and tell it to run all from my computer. attached is the screen i'm on about.

I've not read the above but a common cure is to do a full uninstall then run the Microsoft Office 2000 erasor tool - this removes all registry entries and stuff left over from the install.
Restart then do a full install and see if that works.

I assume you're a local admin and not just a "power user"?

one thing to try is installing it in safemode (not sure how you xp victims get at it) that way nothing like scumware/spyware might interfeer with its installation, if oyu get the same problem that rules out other rubbishy stuff messing with it.

Nope!

Hit the restart button on your computer, or turn it on, whilst it is testing the RAM etc, keep hitting F8, you'll get a menu up where you can select safe mode.

The actual moment to press F8 is just before it says "Starting Windows...", but it's easy to miss so just keep hitting it like I said.

You said Works is installed? Remove it and try installing Office on its own.
