Epoxy on Exhaust, and anyone know a good VHT paint?

ok so i have just started trying to repair my exhaust downpipes, and decided to go for gun gum as a temporary repair until i can pluck up the money ( and the courage) to spend £200 on a new set.

when i was browsing in my garage i found some 5 minute epoxy, and after reading the back i found it can be used for metal applications! i thought that perhaps as an added reinforcement to stop water getting on to the gun gum, i could epoxy over the top.

now i have no i dea how well epoxy will handle the heat that the pipes generate, but do people think it will work to act as a water barrier?

next question: does any one know of a very good exhaust paint? the last one i tried on my current bike just flaked off (even after 7 coats!) on the first wet ride.

Halfords own brand VHT paint is as good as any.

No paint on earth will stay on the headers.

I think the epoxy idea would work as well as most tempory exhaust repairs and fall off after a few miles. As for the paint, what sort of surface are you painting onto? Preperation is usualy everything when painting

the high temperature epoxy melted after 15minutes or so on my 125. gun gum has lasted forever.
either brazing or welding would give a permanent fix. If the pipes are stainless why not get a kitchen scourer and scrub all the crap off and then finish them using polish. this will take a while though if you don't have a drill and a polishing wheel. if you have these should take 15-30 minutes depending on how good you want the finish.

i have just sprayed my exhaust with homebase bbq paint.
excellent stuff at a fiver a can, comes in a variety of colours, though i just use the matt black.
lasts for ages.

thanks for the replys people! i think i will give the epoxy a miss and try both paints reconmended. hope it all goes well!

I sprayed the downpipes of my old GPZ with BBQ paint from B&Q. I think it was the Plastikote brand.
It slightly discoloured / faded over time, but lasted a good 12-18 months of almost daily riding in all weathers

I have been patching up the exhaust on the GSX for the best part of a year. I have tried everything as I cannot afford £300 for a complete system just yet on a 25 year old bike.....

BBQ paint is good. As is Halford's VHT paint. It needs to be reapplied often though as it doesn't last.

The best method I have found for sealing holes is by using a Holts Flexiwrap, Gun Gum and lots of time...it needs to be free from rust...

I have one sealing the downpipes to the silencer pipe as it's too thin to weld, apparently...it has held really well.

Another thing I have been testing this year is Fire Putty:

I've used it directly on the headers to seal them better with the corroded clamps with surprising success. It has not cracked nor fallen off yet. I will be testing it on the flexiwrap soon as the Gun Gum fell off a while back.

yea i was going to look at the flexiwrap, and just tape over the whole thing. i will upload some photos of my very ott repair.

after painting however the repair wont be noticable as it on the underside of the pipes (near the join between the muffler). so far its looking good. im definatley going to give that b&q paint a shot as well.

realistically, i just need the pipes to last long enough until i can afford a new set, so even if they last 6 months, im still 6 month better off.

will keep everyone posted as to how my repairs go, and if i find any tricks to share!

Epoxy such as araldite etc will break down at about 220C,
I have used B&Q and plasticote bbq paint on my TZR exhausts and found that once I had given the bike a good run the paint flaked off.

I can vouch for PJ1 exhaust paint ( repaint once every year )

and have heard others say that halfords stuff is ok but I have not tried the halfords stuff my self

the stuff i got from homebase is actually "rustoleum" or similar, not there own make as i thought.
& its very good, i found it better than plasticote hot paint (which has to be heat cured) & halfords vht paint & was just as good as that PJ1 stuff (i like there fork oil cos they come in 8 different weights).
that exhaust wrap is quite decent though, & cheap, i used it on a 2t stinger with good results,

well so far i have repaired the leaks (i hope... yet to start the bike). i am going to get the pipes nice and hot to dry the gun gum properly.

i tried some halfords stuff and my current bike. it just came striaght off, so tried the plastikote stuff. if thats not good its not the end of the world, but im hoping because the pipes were actually in good condidtion the paint will stick nicely .

PJ1, and the homebase stuff sound good to. if this stuff is no good i might take the pick between them, and try that.

Try R.S paints ,tell them the guy with the supercharged gpz900 told you and they may do you a good deal.
